Biological Sciences...

ok so i will be attending NC State in the fall and i am wondering what is the stregnth of the program and how good is it? ALso will this also be applicable if i want to attend med school? It will help with the chem and bio stuff but anything else i should know?

Not exactly the same but…a family friend graduated from NCSU with a Bio. major. He is now in his second year of dental school.

My son spent a day at State, attended a class, and met with the head of the department, Dr. Flick. She really knew what was going on with everyone and basically said that if someone from there didn’t get into med school, it was from their lack of trying. She blew my husband and son away with the meeting that they had. They were very impressed.
My son ultimately decided to attend Tulane, but would have been happy to go there as well after meeting with her.

great then. i cannot wait til fall!

anyone know the stregnth of the program?

I’m not certain exactly what you’re asking for as far as “strength” of the program, but I’m a Zoology major, which is now under the same department, so I can offer some anecdotal info.

From what I have seen, the biology department is seriously on top of their game. The website is constantly updated, they have their own academic/advising student support group (BIOPals,) and the professors I’ve had for both of my introductory biology courses were super intelligent, friendly, and genuinely cared about their students. (Take Engell for 181 if you can.) In addition, there are a couple biology concentrations in the degree, such as Human Biology, Physiology & Neurobiology, etc.

Since I’m pretty certain the biology degree covers all the pre-requisites for medical school, finishing the degree will definitely have you on the right path. Anita Flick, the head mentioned earlier, is actually the director of our HealthPAC program, which exists to advise pre-med, dental, optometry, etc. students.
