I know this is a pretty specific question, but how bad of an idea is it to purchase the third edition of Biological Science by Freeman for bio 171? I've heard that it is very similar to the fourth edition and profs tell you the page numbers for readings for both editions. It would save me a whole lot of money if I just got the third edition so, any info would be helpful.

Thanks in advance :)

You pay how much tuition and your going to save how much by purchasing an out of date book?

There pretty much the same thing. I had the 3rd edition last semester, the only trouble I had was some of the assigned readings page numbers were for the 4th edition only some of the time. Overall, it is no big deal to use the 3rd edition

Hey! I’m in bio 171 too and Dr. Eidietis sent out an email a few weeks ago saying:

"We are using Biological Science by Freeman (4th edition) published in 2010 by Pearson.
“Mastering Biology” is a useful study tool. However, it is not required for Biology 171 in the Fall 2011 term.

The 3rd edition is not appropriate, as some of the information is incorrect and outdated."

That answers your question! Try to rent the book from chegg, it was the cheapest i found and it cost about $80 for the semester
