I took AP Biology in high school, but apparently this only replaces the lecture portion of a freshman biology class, not the lab. So, I still have to take BIOLOGY 173, now or later.

I have heard a lot of negative things about this two-credit class, and its teacher (Ammerlaan). I need feedback on whether or not I should take this class now or save it for a later time. I NEED to get an A in this class, which I heard is next to impossible with this teacher.

So those of you who have taken this class before or know people who have taken it: help!

Let me clarify that when I say “negative things,” I am referring to things I’ve heard regarding the difficulty of the class and the teacher. In other words, I’ve heard many people say Professor Ammerlaan is not an easy grader, and this class is no walk in the park.

An A is definitely not impossible lol. The instructor is fine, and the class is fine. Just treat the quizzes as exams and you’re good.

What do the quizzes of this lab usually entail? Is there a textbook that we need to read in addition to attending the classroom and laboratory sections of this class?

Quizzes test concepts learned in lab and lecture. No textbook, just a really short lab manual. Very good class.

Ok thank you blackpen! I am going to take it, but I am having problems signing up for it. I already had my orientation, and did not sign up for this class then. Instead, as I’m trying to sign up for this class right now on wolverine access, it says I have not met the pre-requisites (162,163, etc.) necessary to take this class. However, my academic advisor informed me that the score I received on the AP Biology exam meets these requirements, so I was wondering: do you know what I should do now? Should I contact my advisor about this?

Just email your advisor. He/she may ask you to email the instructor for an override.

Is this the process that everyone who receives credit for AP Biology must follow? It seems quite ridiculous for all matriculating freshman with AP credit to have to follow this process to enroll in this class.

if you ever have trouble getting into a class, you should try e-mailing the class instructor/prof. first

to my knowledge, advisers don’t actually have any power over registration for classes.
