Biology at Holy Cross?

How selective is the Biology major at holy cross? Any statistics or comments about it?

Any other thoughts about biology at holy cross would be great. Thanks!

It is one of the more rigorous because it is a common major for premeds and HC has a really tough premed program but get nearly 90% into med school. Also have fabulous new facilities with 65 million dollar science complex completed in January.

The bio major is pretty tough to get into, they look much more closely at what math and science courses you’ve taken and your m/s gpa. There are only about 40-50 students accepted into the major.

If I am not accepted as a biology major, can I still be accepted to the school?

Yep. And you can major in any other science. If you are really into bio and still want to go to HC, then you could be a chemistry major and go for the biochemistry concentration (which you can do in either the biology or chemistry major).

Or you could transfer into the biology dept. if you get good grades freshman year. I know people who were able to do this as long as they took the other sciences required for the biology degree.

i’ve been wondering how hard the pre-med program is to get into, which like the bio major, you are considered seperately. also if i am not accepted into the program now, can i get into it later in college.

just wanted to clarify some of the numbers… normally there are two intro bio 1 sections for majors with about 40 in each. So out of the 80 in intro 1 the majority are new freshman (with the rest being sophomores). Therefore they have to accept more, say 120 or so kids, to fill the ~65 spots as not every accepted students goes to HC (the exact number they accept im not sure of but my guess its in the 100s).

Also for pre-med, i heard that my year (this yrs senior class) started with around like 175 or something like that (pretty big when there are only ~750 in the entire class). And it is possible to transfer into premed like bio. Just try and get into the intro chem 1st semester (it might be hard as all the spots are saved for premed/bio/chem)

I got my numbers from the percentage in the bio major: 7% of 2,700 divided by four. But that would be the number of spots, not accepted students. So with a yield rate of about 35% it’s approx 135 students accepted for about 50 spots.

But thanks for clearing it up and the info on the pre-med class, I wasn’t sure just how big it was.
