I got rejected from UCLA (which is ok because UCSD was my first choice all along). I heard that UCSD was better than UCLA in the sciences. Is this true or are people trying to be nice?

biology at ucsd is better than at ucla… i believe. biology is an impacted major at sd. i think LA is just looking for more personality and well-roundedness to their applicants.

LA is better at Aerospace Engineering. Overall we have higher ranked engineering but not by much.

What about job prospects in SD compared to LA in biology (not premed)? Like marine sciences or genetics oriented. I’m planning on grad school but wanted to work a little after my bachelor’s for job experience in the field.

Shouldn’t be much of a difference at all. Both are well respected for science in general. UCSD is impacted for Biology though.

@konakai
Literally every job you mentioned would be easier to get into from UCSD. We are THE bio UC.

^^ Shhhh don’t give away our secret to the world!! Now some pro UCI/UCLA/UCD ppl will come fight you!!

Yay! I’m so excited for SD!

After getting rejected from UCLA, I feel a whole lot better after reading this. (: Woo-hoo!

My D is going into Marine Biology and has been accepted by both UCSD as a Bio major and U. of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine Science as a bio/marine bio major.

Should she go to Miami (having to pay only $10,000 after aid) or UCSD (having to pay $24,000 after aid).

She is planning on going to grad school and could do Miami for undergrad and UCSD for grad school.

Opinions?

While I agree that ucsd is better for bio…I don’t think anyone can doubt that UCDavis has the best biology program out of all of the UCs!!!

^Is that a joke? For bio, especially for anyone interested in biotech, the competitors would be Stanford, JHU and Duke. Davis?

^ notice the last sentence I wrote… I said out of the UCs!!!
Nobody even brought up biotech

My impression is that Davis biology concentrates more on ecology and agriculture and not to mention the weird majors it has like “exercise biology,” while SD is more about the molecular biology and neurosciences.

OK, out of the UC’s for bio, the only competition would be Berkeley. My point was that not only is UCSD the best among the UC’s, in this single area they compete with some of the top schools in the Country.

SVMMom: I, too, am interested in marine bio. I’ve heard, though, that it is best to major in some sort of general biology for undergrad so that you get a broader sense of the subject. Then, when she goes for grad school, she can choose a specific field.

If she’s interested in marine bio, then grad school at Scripps Institute at UCSD is the way to go! That’s the school I’m aiming for. I’m hoping that by going to UCSD for undergrad, I might have opportunities to do research with and meet professors who teach at Scripps. However, I don’t know if that would even happen or if it would give me an edge.

If money is a HUGE issue, I’d say Miami because marine biologists will be in school for a long time and it isn’t a high paying profession. However, she should pick the school where she feels most comfortable.

does biochem count as biology…-_-x

UCSD is better than Stanford in biotech actually

^ stanford does not even offer biotech!!

You might want to take a look at Scripps in a little more detail. They do relatively little “classic” marine biology. I worked there as an undergrad (in a microbio lab) and it was great, but not the Jaques Cousteau kind of thing a lot of people expect.
