Biology/Biomedical Sciences Applicants 2008

Maudib,

I just got an interview/recruitment invite for Harvard MCB too! Are you Feb 6th-9th as well?

As I'm a California native, is anyone here familiar with the east coast and have tips on dressing for cold weather???

Hi All,

I'm new to this thread, but thought I'd give it a shot. I've been checking out posts for awhile :). Wanted some advice on if it's time to give up hope. Here are my stats and grad school lists :)

GPA: 3.701 cum / 3.84 major (neuroscience)
GREs: 750 m / 570 v (i know =( ) / 6.0 a
Research Experience: Summer @ Los Alamos National Laboratory, Spring & Summer in Biochemistry lab, Summer @ Harvard Medical School (Children's Hospital Boston - part of SHURP program, specifically Neuro lab with popular guy), Year in Neuroscience lab (Fall & Spring) doing honors research involving an honors seminar and thesis

APPLIED (all Neuro unless otherwise noted): UCSF, UMichigan, Case Western, UPenn, Harvard (BBS), Rockefeller, Hopkins, Princeton (Molecular Biology), Jefferson
INTERVIEWS: UMichigan (Notified via phone call on 1/3...interviewing on 1/24-1/27), Jefferson (just got the e-mail, said I preferred 1/31-2/1)
REJECTIONS: None

I saw a lot of ppl already heard from some...Not sure if it's time to call in the towel or if I ever even stood a chance!!

PS...To Bioangele. Dress warm. (Obviously haha). I live in PA...Right now it's 31 degrees. Comfy shoes, good coat, scarf, etc. Your ears get pretty cold, so maybe a good hat or earmuffs? Think thermal! HMS is gorgeous, as is the main campus across the river...but I was there in the summer...it's probably pretty snowy now!!

Congratulations Maudib! I thought though that Harvard doesn't give interviews...Unless you are not from the US?
Harvard BBS doesn't interview. Harvard MCB (and, I believe, every other biology PhD program at Harvard) does interview. BBS and MCB are administered through different schools and have very different procedures and policies.

Indeed. :) We just got ~7 inches yesterday.

Wow, it seems like everyone on this forum are well qualified. I wonder why I didn't find this place earlier?

Quick intro: I'm from Vancouver, Canada, so I'm considered an international student but I'm probably closer to most schools than many domestic students.

My stats:
Joint Major in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry and Computing Science
GPA: 3.94 on a 4.0 scale ( i had to convert this; we have a completely different scale)
GRE: 800Q (94%) /720V (98%) 5.5W (88%)
GRE Biochemistry: 710 (97%)

Experience: 4 different summers/part-time terms of experience. Experience varies from bioinformatics to molecular biology to genomic analysis. I really tried a lot of things in my undergrad to explore my options.
I have no papers in my name on pubmed, but it's tagged along on lots of abstracts.

Applied: UWashington (Genome Sciences), WUSTL, Stanford (Genetics), Harvard (BBS), MIT, Yale (BBS), Sanger Institute, UW Madison, UCSF

Interviews: Stanford, St. Louis, Sanger

Accepted: Yale

Rejected: UCSF

I would like to note that, although UCSF rejected me, I wish everyone could me more like them and actually send a letter of rejection instead of keeping us hanging in the middle.

Although, I actually didn't wait that anxiously as many other people here did. I figure I can't really voodoo them into accepting me.

l3monkid, great stats!!! Congrats on your interviews!!

I completely second your opinion about schools sending us our rejection letters earlier instead of keeping us hanging in the middle. I wonder, why some schools wait so long to send the rejection letters? I strongly feel that knowing whether we are in or out would help us to move on instead of checking our emails atleast 20 times a day :-)!!

I have a question: does MIT Biology do interviews?

I'm an occasional reader of Mollie's blog (who's an amazing writer btw), and I think I remember her saying something about interviews when she went through it. But then I also have memories of the contrary from elsewhere, so I'm not sure.

Hi l3monkid,
I heard there were interviews. And if you look in the comments of people who were accepted to MIT Biology on Applycorner, you'll see they talked about interviewing there, although that info was covered up when they submitted their acceptance result.

I'm just curious. Has any school sent out rejections besides UCSF? Thanks.

Hello everyone ... I have been following all the posts and thought I should include my info as well. :)

Applied: UCSF, Stanford, Caltech, UCLA, UCSD, MIT, WUStL, and Cornell [mostly biomedical science programs]

Interviews: WU St. Louis (3/7) (anyone else having interview this day? ... I feel it's kind of late after looking at how early everyone is having their interviews)

Rejection: UCSF (painful but swift) ... and hopefully no more rejections.

Accepted: none :(

Good luck to all. And please do us all a favor and reject school you are not interested in attending early to give the rest of us a chance ... Thanks.

Hi everyone, I noticed that for some, you have listed Yale as accepted. Does this mean you have no interview process? Thanks.

UW- Seattle (MCB) has already sent out rejections. I am not aware of any other schools than that and UCSF.

Also, anyone heard from Johns Hopkins Molecular Medicine program? Thanks.

Anyone else here interviewing for UCSF bioinformatics?

From my experience last year, schools are somewhat slow in handing out rejections -- unless they're sure they don't want you, they take ages to give official contact. I had to bug the TSRI secretary endlessly until she finally admitted that they weren't giving any more interviews and everyone else could be considered as denied.

I am. Valentines day weekend?

I have a question: does MIT Biology do interviews?
Yes, they do, and they were the last school I heard from that year (around the 27th of January). I mean, basically everybody does interviews -- Harvard BBS is just weird because it's a big program with a huge number of professors spread over many institutions, and they don't want the headache of having to have everybody evaluated during the interview and then decide whom to admit. It's logistically easier for a big program to just not interview.

And thanks for the kind words! :)

has anyone heard from UCLA or Columbia or Pitt (for psych)? I'm getting worried that I haven't heard....

MCBartist, Yale apparently tells you that you are admitted, but has you come visit the school and interview with professors. It seems to be more of a selling point for them so that you would choose Yale as your graduate school.

No, Yale doesn't have an interview process. I know this because when they called me on the phone I went "what? do I not have to interview?". :P
Yale's weekend is purely a recruitment weekend. Still an important weekend if you're actually considering going there.

Is that true for all Yale BBS programs (I applied for the pharmacology and molecular medicine) or just for MCBGD?

If it is, then what a relief! :)
