Biology/Biomedical Sciences Applicants 2008

wait they actually hung up on you when you asked? that's crazy

honestly, I don't think it's a very good idea for you guys to call the schools. I'm in the same boat as many of you, I'm still waiting for a few schools to get back to me (meanwhile they're accepting/inviting people left and right), but the truth is that there is nothing you calling them will do. It will just annoy them. Unless you've applied to 50 billion schools and you need the information to schedule your interviews, my advice is just tell yourself that you've been rejected and deal with it. That's what I'm doing. Then, if a week later they call you and invite/accept you, then HOORAY, all is well. Otherwise, stop waiting for their call as if you're waiting for your date to call back, and live life. Focus on your other interviews, or at least try to.

Although this is a slightly delayed response, did you hear from Berkeley chem by email or mail? And if anyone has heard from Stanford in either Biochem or Chemical and Systems Bio, was that by mail or email? Thanks!

Hi chemincali,

I haven't heard from Stanford Biochemistry either and was wondering the same thing...

aevertts, are you going to visit Indiana?

Did anyone here apply to Northwestern's Integrated Graduate Program and hear back from them?

Their website says that they send out interviews early to mid January, and I'm wondering if they're already finished sending them out.

Thanks :)

hey buffkitten, I actually went to IU for undergrad and love the university and city. I'll be there for the 2/14-2/17 recruitment weekend. Since they accept students before the interview, it should be even more relaxed and just a great time to hear about research. Are you going?

Stanford sent out all of its interview packages recently. Some home departments didn't send out emails (aka Biophysics), but my friends and I all got our packages on the same day for Stanford Biosciences. Since there is only one weekend, I would assume that they are done.

It's hard - I really want to go to all my interviews, but it doesn't seem possible to fit them all in and go to school and do research at the same time.

I really am interested in Indiana - it seems like it would be a very student-focused school, and I like that.

On Stanford's website:

"In general, if one has not heard about a possible interview by early February, it is unlikely that you will be invited to Stanford for interview weekend or admitted. Applicants who are not selected for an interview will receive a letter which states that no further action will be taken on their application by the Committee on Graduate Admissions and Policy."

Does anyone have a resource for learning attrition rates of various programs?

Stardash - I also applied to NW (the college of arts and sciences program IPiB, not the med school's program) and have not heard back.

l3monkid - good post. I def. agree that calling is just about the worst thing you can do. In fact, I have actually heard that the program coordinators, administrators, and secretaries are important people to be polite to and not annoy because they let the admissions people know when there is a "problem kid"

stardash - i heard back from Northwestern IGP last week, via email.

ec1234- i think that stanford has two interview weekends- the second one is apparently right after berkeley's second interview in late february (because they say that they provide a shuttle between the two- but you got that email, right?) also, last year people started receiving rejections around 2/14.

I just got an email for interview from a school I thought I was rejected: columbia... I think KUNRD07 got his interveiw invitation long ago in the early Jan?

KUNRD07, you said you applied biochemistry there? what program did you choose in the online application system? I just realized i didn't apply to their department of biochemistry but actually applied to their department of biologcial scinece, which had an option of BioCHEM in the online application..I am wondering if i am going to the wrong department :|.....

and anyone konws columbia's how its Open House interveiw is? Can I skip that since it has a time conflict with Berkeley's interview ...

Hello to everyone on the board and thank you for your posts. I have been checking the website daily hoping to see something regarding Harvard University's Neuroscience program but to no avail.

Has anyone heard anything from Harvard HILS-Neuro? Their website says tentative admissions interviews are on January 25th and 26th but I have not heard anything yet. If they rejected me, I would like to know so I can move on.

Good luck to everyone.

I also was wondering about Columbia since it conflicts with another interview. If anyone works at Columbia or is familiar with the program can you please pm me?

Hi 9bull,

I applied to the Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics track, which is one of four tracks in The Graduate Program in Cellular, Molecular, Structural and Genetic Studies which itself is one of four programs in the Coordinated Doctoral Programs Biomedical Sciences through Columbia Medical Center. Phew, that's confusing. LOL
