Biology Competitions?

after taking the AP biology test and the SAT II test..i really got into biology and stuff....so like i wanna go a bit Further..but i was wondering like..how?
and is there any national competitions or something (NJ) that i could sign up for?

Oh and btw...i really didnt know where to post this but i figured id post it here since after all its "Post-AP" .. :) lol..
(plz dont go saying post somewhere else..lol)

Go post on the high school life forum, and ask them how you can get one.

Jk

Forget competitions, figure out how to manufacture a cost effective drug that blocks the cd4 glycoprotein receptor sites on helper t cells from HIV without effecting normal immunological response. If you do that then you should be good to go.

and you say I need to get a life...

I am also all about biology. But not everything is about competing. Personal statisfaction in biology can be gained trough reading the matterial that interests you, for personal fulfillment. The problem of the modern world is that most want to know something simply to be better that the other, and not simply for the sake of knowlege.

i know what you mean...same here....i wanna learn to learn not for being better..but i was asking cause i saw some ppl talking abt national competitions for some subjects..and like i figured if there was such a thing it would be a good motivation to learn

There are not that many biology competitions ( I don't know why), and if there are any, I would like to hear about them too.

USABO........

wait um ...theres one thing i dont get though...i alreadY TOOK AP biology this year..is it possible that i tell my teacher to nominate me NEXT year (even though she wont be teaching me, but i m pretty sure she ll agree..)

haha thanks..( i looked on the website btw..but i didnt really find anything)
thanks man

yes you can. you'll have to self study a LOT though. my friend did the chemistry olympiad. he studied all the time b/c it requires a lot of knowledge.

Do we know what topics it will cover?

Ok, I see the topics. THAT IS A LOT OF MATERIAL! The people that will do very well at this competion are those that can memorize quickly and for long periods of time.

Where is the topics list?
i can only see that it recommends campbell 6th edition...
lol

any teacher can nominate you

The topics are at the bottom of the PDF file called the "Competitor's Handbook". Although many of these topics are important, many are not. For example, it requires you to know the Whittaker's 5 kingdom system, which as any person well familiar with biology knows, is no longer in use by the scientific community. The 3 domain system, on the other hand, is now the modern system, and is founded on the recently developed molecular taxonomic techniques.

yea but do you really think the material is THAT hard?..
i mean after taking AP covered at least like 75 % of it...probably alot more..so that doesnt really leave that much studying...

Personally, I took AP Bio in my freshman year, so I don't remember all the nasty details about the kingdoms. But now I am studying microbiology, and not a lot of the topics come from micro in the competition. Too bad for me.......

I took USABO last year. I was a semifinalist. I really recommend not spending too much time on it. If you really like biology go intern with a doctor or something like that. USABO is pretty useless, especially knowing all the stupid, intricate facts.

Thanks, you made me feel much better........

yea thanks,....i guess im not gonna waste my time on it ......

"AP covered at least like 75% of it..."

No. Not even close. If you intend to try for the international team, you'll need a lot more than AP. If you're only interested in the open exam, have fun, but don't think that you're all set for an olympiad just because you took AP.
