I heard that taking advanced classes in biology can help with the MCAT; if I can only fit in one (or two) advanced biology courses in my schedule, which ones do you recommend?
I've heard people say that cell biology, genetics, and microbiology would be good ones to take. Is that right?
Also, I'm taking the new 2015 MCAT (if that matters)

This really depends on your school’s offering. You’re best to contact your advisor and ask. You can also take a look at the general outline of biology topics that AAMC puts out.

And biochem?

D. said genetics and physiology. But she took old MCAT and it was few years ago (currently MS3).
Yes, advisor and pre-meds at your school who have taken MCAT are probably the best sources.

i would put physiology on par with genetics and biochem and more useful than micro/immuno/endocrinology

Well, D. did not take Biochem before MCAT. I do not know if it affected her score or not, but she had a decent one.

Biochem will be a big part of the 2015 MCAT.

Sorry I didn’t mention biochem because I assumed I would most definitely take it, since it’s a big part of the new MCAT. I’m also taking intro to sociology and intro to psychology. I was talking more about the courses that aren’t necessarily recommended by the AAMC but that could be helpful according to MCAT takers/preppers.

I did ask my pre-health adviser about taking genetics and he said he never heard of anyone saying that taking genetics was helpful. :/

Thank you all for the replies :)

I was reading MS for dummies and here was the list of “recommended” courses that may or not be required for MCAT and or certain medical schools (obviously you can figure out which ones are Bio courses). ;)

Anatomy
Biochemistry (needed for new MCAT)
Cell biology
Foreign language (Spanish especially useful)
Genetics
Immunology
Microbiology
Molecular biology
Physiology
Psychology (needed for new MCAT)
Sociology (needed for new MCAT)
