I am a freshman at the university of tampa. Currently I am a biology major with concentration in organismal/evolution. I love being outside/the ocean/nature/animals. I have considered changing majors to the marine science/biology double major they have here but the job outlook/pay for marine science/biology field is not too good. I also am interested in ecology and the environment and even geology interests me but UT doesn't offer geology, only environmental science. Basically i don't know what i want to do exactly but these are my interests so any advice/recommendations would be appreciated. if it helps at all, i would definitely consider going to graduate school for whatever i do. Thank you!

I honestly have no idea what you are asking for. What has better job outlook?? From my understanding, probably geology. Geology at my school is offered under a term called “Geoscience” so I would look for that. Better pay? Maybe geology if you work for oil. Honestly it is kind of hard to say. They all have their pro’s and con’s so just pick what appeals to you more so you can be happy in life, not just what has better “pay” or “outlook” because eventually you will succeed.

I am unaware of any area of biology that has anyting other than dismal or nonexistant job prospects. If you think a MS or PhD will change that you are sorely mistaken. If anything it will make it worse. You will have a label of overqualified and academic on you for the rest of your life when trying to get a job.

what would you recommend for an undergraduate degree with a good job outlook? in the science field specifically…

Biotechnology, Pharmacology maybe, Physics and Applied Math?

Most of the hard sciences (Biology, Chem, even Physics and Biochem) have pretty bad job outlooks for undergrad degrees. In most, you will need a PhD to get a job. Have you considered Professional school after you finish your Bachelors? A lot of science grads go on to med, dental, podiatry, or pharmacy schools.

how about geology? my school doesn’t offer that so i would have to transfer, but does geology have a better job outlook compared to biology? and whatever i major in i would go graduate school if needed

Possibly Food Science. At least you are taught industry relevant knowledge and skills. Flavorists are always in high demand as everyone needs to eat and prefer flavorful foods.
