Biology major at Drexel

Hi! I'll be at Drexel in the fall as a bio major. I just wanted to know how my professors were (if any upperclassmen have had them in the past) and what books I need. Here are the classes I'm taking and the professors I have.

Bio 122 (Cells & Genetics) - Dr. Shivanthi Anandan
Chem 101 (Gen. Chem I) - Dr. Daniel King
English 101 (Expository Writing & Reading) - Dr. Jacqueline Landau
Honors 200 - Dr. Mary Jo F. Grdina
Math 121 (Calc I) - don't know professor yet

Also, if it makes any difference, I'm in the honors sections of Bio and Chem. Thanks so much!

King’s great - he’s the best intro chem prof, so you’re lucky if they made him the honors lecturer. In all reality, though, you can attend any of the chem lectures - the tests are the same over all of the sections (unless the policy has changed within the last three years). I would recommend the gen chem book - I read it and aced all of the tests. Those who didn’t read it didn’t fare as well.

Anandan is good but she’s strict. You need to know your stuff, but she’ll teach it fairly well. I had a different prof for 122, but I had her for an upper-level class. Again, I read the book and aced 122. I used to be a stickler for reading, though.

Don’t know anything about the rest of the professors. For the books, it’s your call. I found them to be helpful when I was a freshman, but as the years have gone by I’ve relied less and less on the textbooks and more on the slideshows and my notes. To each his or her own. Let me know if you have other questions.

Thanks so much! Wow I feel a lot better about college :)

My calc professor is Dr. Derek Heilman. And of course if anyone else knows anything about my other professors every bit helps. Also, where did people get textbooks? I realize there’s the Barnes & Noble store at Drexel, but that’s kinda expensive. Did anyone get any of their books from anywhere cheaper? Also, specifically what is the calc (Math 121) textbook? On the Drexel bookstore website it says I need Calc Single & Multivariable with author Anton and publisher Wiley. When I go look up the ISBN number on Amazon or even on the publisher’s website there’s no such book. I even tried it with the title and author. I find two separate books one for single and one for multivariable, but are these the right books?

Do we need to buy textbooks for English 101? It says that the McGrawhill handbook and access code as well as an anthology are required. It also says an MLA handbook is recommended. Do we really need these for the course?

Also, did anyone find buying study guides from the publisher of the textbooks (for chem or calc for example) helpful at all?

Thanks so much!
