Biology (not pre-med)

When I was at Georgetown (over 20 yrs ago) they had a 38 course minimum with many requirements (philosophy, theology, history, economics, etc) and I was a biology major. I felt that I graduated from GU with a useless bio degree. I had to take so many unrelated classes that it was hard to figure out what I could do with my bio degree and if I went to grad school what would I want. Good thing I went to Medical School. Now my daughter is looking into biology (Not Pre-Med) and I was wondering how GU has changed or not changed. I have always felt GU to be a great "pre-professional" school, but lacked in the sciences unless you wanted to be a doctor. I felt I was overloaded with 5 classes a semester that it was hard to do well, especially with the fact that when I was there a >95 was an A and 85 to 94 was a B/B+. Now that my daughter is looking at some prestigious schools, they all have 32 course minimum with faculty advisors, many research mentors, etc. What is GU like now for non pre-med students and are you still on your own in the science dept? Just not sure if GU is the place for a not pre med major. Thanks. Otherwise I loved my time at GU.

I’m in the NHS and I do have a faculty advisor, but I don’t know how that works in the College. I know only one person among my bio/chem majoring friends that is not pre-med, but honestly, “premed” is not such a tough pre-professional track to pursue anymore, especially with the flexibility decent AP scores can give. (I finished more than half of my GU requirements before freshman year through dual credit classes at a college during high school and doing fairly well on the AP tests that GU did accept)…Right now, I only have math/sci classes–which is an optimal schedule for me…but then again I am premed. The letter grading system is variable from teacher to teacher here–some give an A for 93-100 while for others, anything below a 95 is an A-. Overall, I don’t consider GU to be “the place” for any hardcore sciences, whether or not premed (I mean, have you seen our aging Reiss building or the antique lab dept in WGR??) but it is indeed a great overall school.
