Biology or Chemistry major?

I really can’t decide what to major for my Bachelor of Science. I am very interested in biology and chemistry… In the future I plan to be a medical doctor in Family Practice. Is there a certain major that may be beneficial to that career?

Humanities.

If you like biology and chemistry and want to be a doctor you should look into biochemistry.

Med schools will encourage you to major in what interests you. Most kids choose bio, maybe out of interest, but often because it kills two birds with one stone (satisfies major and premed reqs at same time) whereas if you’re a history major you’ll need to find time to fit in premed reqs (and MCAT prep, MCAT itself, ECs, etc). No major will prepare you for Family Med. Med schools will however care a great deal about your GPAs and hopefully if you’re interested in material you’ll do well. As a note, double majoring or major and minor wont wow med schools, again unless your GPAs are competitive. Good luck

The most common pre-med major is biology, with chemistry being second. That being said, you don’t have to major in either to get into med school as long as you take the required prerequisite courses as an undergraduate.

Since you are said you are very interested in biology and chemistry, unless you have a burning desire to major in something else I wouldn’t think there is really much of a dilemma. Pick either one and make sure you cover all the prerequisite courses, which will be very easy if you pick biology, since the prerequisites are typically all biology degree requirements anyway.

GPA is very important to getting into medical school. Some strategize about choosing something easier so their GPA is higher.

Med school is hard to get into, and some don’t make it. In this circumstance, you might want to think about what your back up plan is, and choose a major accordingly.

Last thought, which is probably what JustOneDad had in mind, is that med schools see so many apps from biology and chemistry majors that sometimes there may be an edge in majoring in something else. You set yourself apart from the crowd perhaps.
