I have been accepted to both school and they both offer lots of pros and cons so to weigh them out objectively I am going to focus on my major specifically to make my final decision. I plan to major in biology pre med focusing more towards genetics. Which school do you think has the best program and the most opportunity for undergrad research which I have been told is a big deal for med admission. I am posting this on both school's pages to try to remain as unbiased as possible. Thanks for your information.

Florida State easily. The faculty-student ratios alone make this a simple decision.

Student to Faculty ratios - per 2008-2009 Common Data Set:

FSU: 20.5 to 1 See: http://www.ir.fsu.edu/Common_Data_Set/2008-09/I.html
UCF: 30.9 to 1 See: [UCF - Common Data Set 2009-10](http://www.iroffice.ucf.edu/commondataset/commondataset09/commondataset09.html#faculty)
UF: 20.3 to 1 See: [Office of Institutional Planning and Research - Common Data Set: CDS Section B Enrollment and Persistence](http://www.ir.ufl.edu/OIRAPPS/CDS/CDS_UF.asp?pagesource=instruct)

UCF’s faculty - student numbers are going in the wrong direction.

Secondly, from personal experience FSU offers outstanding opportunities for undergraduate research. My D1 (now a first year med student at FSU Med) took part in this and it helped her gain admission to med school. Her undergraduate major was biochemistry.

I do not understand how faculty student ratios makes a school’s biology program better.

FSU has had 3 Rhodes Scholars in the past 5 years, and maybe another one will be added this year. Florida State blows UCF out of the water in terms of opportunities to go to medical school.

cough tier 3 cough

More access to faculty leads to greater student success. You would be competing with far fewer students for interaction with the faculty member at Florida State. The students at FSU are generally better students than at UCF. This means you’ll work harder and that expectations will be higher. While more difficult, this makes you better as a student.

Competition for entry to any U.S. allopathic med school will be extremely intense. You will need the edge.

Coming from a Gator fan…

Go with FSU

FSU over UCF for sure.

As a state medical school, it is far less expensive ($18K vs $50K per year) for state residents to attend FSU Med than OOS students. Consequently, FSU Med has more students who come from Florida.

Link below gives breakdown of colleges represented in the Univ. of South Florida’s College of Medicine class of 2013. USF College of Medicine is a public Florida school too. Most of the 120 students are from Florida schools.

Interesting to see so many UF undergrads attending FSU for graduate & professional school. I predict this trend will get larger and larger as the years go by.

It was amusing to see the FSU med students from UF try to blend in during pre-game parties before FSU football games. All love the med school, but it pains them to go completely garnet and gold. They usually wear some semblance of FSU colors…though one wore a UF shirt and was teased relentlessly.

It’s not their fault they couldn’t get into UF med, and its not their fault UF sends out more competitive pre-professional health kids than all the other Florida schools combined, so they all can’t go to their beloved medical school. UF is infiltrating all the professional schools in Florida with their grads.

Do your research into fsu and ucf’s pre-med programs and their med school placements. Overall academically, fsu is ranked much higher and has a longer standing academic reputation.

If you really like that ucf is in orlando, a big, urban area with lots of social opportunities (which I would think is better than Tallahassee), go there.

I think UCF has potential because the state is throwing money at it, but results can’t be seen for awhile.

As a Cane alum, I would recommend FSU because of its history of academic success and it already has a medical school which is good for undergraduate research.
