I know questions similar to this have been asked before, but my situation is a little bit different than the ones I've encountered. I'm not a pre-med student, but I am working towards medical school by taking the required courses. The major I am currently in requires cell biology (no lab), anatomy (lab), physiology (lab), microbiology (lab), and genetics. My advisor told me this would be sufficient for the biology pre-req, but I'm not sure that's completely true. Is she correct?

I don’t remember the requirements off the top of my head but if you are planning to go to medical school and certainly if you are “taking the required courses” then you ARE a pre-med, and pretty much anything you read on this site about being pre-med applies.

Edit: I just realized you might be in a post-bac program (in which case you’re still a pre-med) and but I would assume that if a post-bac tells you “these courses are enough to get into medical school” then they are enough.

First of all, you ARE a pre-med student.

Secondly, are you saying that you’re NOT taking Bio I and Bio II???

You need to make sure that you’ve taken:

Bio I and II (or one year of classes)
Gen Chem I and II
Physics I and II
and 1 or 2 acceptable pre-med math courses…like Cal I

OP, yes, your advisor is correct. Those classes will satisfy bio requirements. Good luck with your studies.

I’m a med student. I took these bio classes as an undergrad: genetics (don’t remember if it had a lab), cell bio (no lab), physiology (lab), 2 senior seminar classes (no lab), and developmental bio (no lab). Sounds like your advisor is spot-on.

Thank you for your replies. I meant that I’m not an actual pre-med major at my university. My advisor is very knowledgeable, so I had a feeling she was correct, but I kept seeing posts saying that General Biology I and II are necessary no matter what other biology classes you take. It’s a relief to know that my advisor is correct.

There is no such thing as a pre-med major at any school.

*but I kept seeing posts saying that General Biology I and II are necessary *

Maybe others can chime in here, but I think you DO have to take Bio I and II…UNLESS you use AP credits and then take 2 Bio classes like the ones you mentioned.

Did you take AP Bio and get the credit? If not, then there might be a problem…not sure.

And, there is no such thing as a pre-med major. The pre-med students are just like you…majoring in whatever they want and taking the pre-reqs.

Notre Dame, with it’s Bachelor of Science in PreProfessional Studies, comes pretty close.
It’s essentially the standard premed prereqs+Uni GE’s (history, theology, philosophy, foreign language)+electives.

well those classes are really important if u want to go to med school u have to take those calsses whatever ur major is
