This is just a hypothetical question that doesn’t really pertain to me, I am just curious. If someone can pass out if gen bio I & II with AP credit but decide to take two bio classes like physiology and genetics, do those classes cover the requirement for Med school? Or do Med schools specifically want bio I & II? I know it may vary by Med school but do other bio classes cover the biology requirement or no? Also would this be a good idea or no? I’m just think because generally either bio I or II focuses on like ecology so I wasn’t sure if it was even worth taking? Thanks
If you have AP credit that appears on your college transcript as equivalent to a specific class at your college, then most medical schools will allow you to substitute upper level bio electives for the biology requirements.
However, this is a med school-specific issue. While most will; not all will.
This is an issue you need to check by carefully reading the admission webpages of all your state medical schools.
While Bio 2 usually covers some topics in ecology, that's not the primary focus of the class--which is more typically evolutionary biology.
I don’t even think having the AP credit on your transcript is necessary if you’re taking advanced courses with labs.
A lot of it depends on the specific UG program. In some programs, students are advised NOT to skip intro Bio class because it is much higher level than HS AP Bio and also because the more advanced Bio classes are built on the material of this class. There is no hypothetical question with hypothetical answer. It is very specific to the UG program and you will need to listen to the advice of pre-med advisory at the SPECIFIC college that you will attend.
As an example, D’s very first college Bio in the first semester of the freshman year went thru AP Bio material in the first 2 weeks and then they moved to the new material. She said that it was good that she listen to her pre-med advisor and did not skip this class after having Honors and AP Bio at HS with As in both and 5 on AP exam. She said that getting a good grade in the next Bio classes would be very very difficult if she skipped the first Bio.
