Biology Subject Test

I’m currently a freshman taking Biology Honors at school. I’m planning on taking the Biology E/M subject test in May. I go to a magnet school and most of the students are taking the Biology SAT and the AP test in May with help from tutors. I’m thinking of self studying using prep books. Should I take the Ecological or Molecular test (which overlaps more with Bio Honors) and any tips/advice on self studying for the test? Oh and will 4 months be enough time to study and get a 800? Thanks!

Hmm. don’t you have AP Biology? You will definitely need to study if you are only taking honors Bio and no AP. At my son’s school, the kids all took the AP exams after taking the AP class. self studying AP bio may be tough. I do know you would be taking the EM though, thats what all the AP classes take.

@ZBD5421‌ My school does not offer AP Biology to freshman because Honors Biology is part of the Tech Program that we are required to take. I’m actually taking the AP Biology test in May too (self study).

Oh, well in that case, study hard if you want a 5. I got my son the Biology AP book and he studied the entire book(although he did have AP Bio too-maybe your school teaches a harder version of honors bio though if you are a magnet school) and he got a 5 no problem. He took EM. Good luck : )

My daughter took both, Biology E in October, and Biology M in December. She is a senior and had just finished the first semester of her online AP Biology class around the time she took Biology E subject test in October (she started the course in the summer). She had not taken Biology (not AP or Honors) since her freshman year, and she didn’t study (except for the online practice questions on the College Board website) for either of the subject tests. She got scores in the high 700s on both parts (not 800s but high enough to show she should be able to handle college work). I think you could self-study and do well on either of the Biology subject tests. Besides, you are a freshman and could retake if you don’t like your score.

I’m a sophomore - haven’t taken AP Bio yet. I got an 800 on the October Bio E by self-studying. Lmao I studied for exactly 14 days (I am in online school though, so for those 14 days I did nothing but live and breath Princeton Review biology haha). So basically, yes, it is very possible to get a good score without AP Bio.

@collegenow111‌ Wow thats awesome! Did you only use the Princeton Review for Biology during the 14 days or any other resources/prep books?

@dlxlee‌
Hi! Yes, I only studied from PR - but I did so thoroughly.
I also did the practice test from The Official Study Guide for All SAT Subject Tests.
:smiley:

@dlxlee It’s totally possible to get an 800 on the Bio SAT after freshman year. I’m a sophomore who did just that on the June 2014 Bio M test last year.

I would recommend Barron’s for studying for the Bio SAT–it’s a little harder than the actual test, but not harder to the point where it intimidates.
