How is Alabama’s biology program? Also, psychology? Thanks!

Bama’s bio program is very good. [Department of Biological Sciences](http://bsc.ua.edu/)

Dr Guy Caldwell and Dr. Kim Caldwell (H & W) have the Caldwell Lab on campus. If interested in working in their lab (they do medical research), you’d need to contact them and interview. their lab is nicknamed, “The Worm Shack” because their medical research involves worms.

*Caldwell lab determines mechanism of action of torsinA
The laboratory of Guy and Kim Caldwell and collaborators at Harvard University have discovered that the protein torsinA, mutations which are implicated in dystonia, participates in protein folding in the endoplasmic reticulum. This finding has implications for other genetic diseases, including cystic fibrosis.
The other bio profs have labs and research opps as well. :)

What area of bio are you considering? Are you pre-med?

Bama has a brand new mega-sized Science and Engineering Complex.

The Psych dept is very strong, doing research in areas ranging from Autism Spectrum Disorders (and Bama has programs to assist students with ASD), to Psychopathy Research, to Criminal Psychology…and many other areas.

Thank you! I am interested in biology from a zoology standpoint. I have done a lot of volunteer work, internships, and camps relating to this field, and I love it.

What is your career goal? Vet school? Animal research?

Honestly, I am not sure yet. My internship was as a keeper, which I loved, but I really do not know yet.

Dachsundlover,

My D is a Bio major on a pre-vet track. She founded the UA Pre-Vet club last fall and if you are interested in learning more pm me and I’ll put you in touch.

She’s been pleased with the bio faculty and classes even had a prof last semester who made her “more certain than ever” that she was in the right place.
