Biomed Engineering at Pitt - How Tough is it??

I have been hearing horror stories that the Biomed Major is super tough and lots of kids are weeded out...I would not want to go there if I am setting myself up for defeat!! Any advice from current Pitt Biomed Majors or those of you who know some? (HS Senior with 3.933 GPA, 25 ACT (31 Math), 1700 SAT (690 Math), plus taking lots of AP and lots of ECs... I just got into Pitt and Mizzou)...

Biomed engineering is going to be challenging no matter where you take it. You want to make sure you go to a good school especially with great undergrad research opportunities, because that is where your most important training will be. Honestly, based on department quality and research opporuntities, out of the Pitt, Mizzou and PSU, Pitt is going to be the best choice, as long as you don’t mind its urban setting.

Pitt is ranked 21st in the US News’ undergrad bioengineering rankings (the other two schools aren’t ranked), and in the grad rankings Pitt is tied for 12th, which give you an idea about the reputation and strength of department, at least in its perception. The other two schools aren’t in the top 20, but I only know the grad list out to 20. Pitt is also in the top 5 of all institutions for NIH funding, which all tells you how much bioscience research is going on there (behind only Harvard, Hopkins, Penn, and UCSF).

It’s tough, but its a major you REALLY have to want to do. It’s not impossible as long as you keep focused (I have maintained over a 3.0, if you’re worried about grades). I’m a junior BioE, but since I seem to repeat myself a lot in threads on bioengineering (I feel like I’m becoming a broken record!), is there anything in particular you want to know? What interests you in bioengineering?
