Hi, I am about to be a high school senior applying as a biomedical engineering major, and was wondering which of the following scores to send
ACT: 33 ( 33 English, 33 Math, 30 Reading, 34 Science)
Old SAT: 2110 (720 Math, 660 Reading, 730 Writing)
New SAT: 1430 (760 Math, 670 English/Reading)
My class rank is in the top 11% of a large competitive Texas public high school, and I do have lots of extracurriculars, volunteering, and AP course load. My unweighted gpa is 3.5, which is probably the main flaw in my application. My weighted gpa for class rank is alright.
Some of the engineering schools I’ll be applying to are Texas A&M, UT (really the school I want to get into, which is why I made this thread), Georgia Tech, U of Michigan, Purdue, and Rice (I understand a lot of them are reaches)
Any feedback on what scores to send and thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!
The class rank will hurt you at UT. Your tests look fine. I think you’ll definitely get into A&M, Purdue, and Mich. You might want to also consider Johns Hopkins and Duke. These are two of the top Biomed Schools in the country, along with GT, Berkely, MIT, Cal Tech, and UT.
@texansfan1 I was originally considering those schools, but I feel that my rank and unweighted gpa are holding me back. You think my scores and hollsitic application would really give me a shot?
I’m also an Asian male, which doesn’t help either
Send all scores. They use the one that results in the highest AI.
They do not look at GPA- weighted or not according to their Common Data Set. That is because the rank is already looking at grades so heavily.
Your test scores are great. Cockrell is very tough and being non-auto admit makes that tougher. Write good essays and get safeties.
I think all these schools have different criteria they use.Who knows, maybe Hopkins needs to round out its class with out of state kids? We know UT focuses on class rank and has to take the top 7%. However maybe Duke focuses more on test scores? I wouldn’t make any assumptions.
I know biomed engineering at UT is one of the hardest majors to get into, if not the hardest. I know of 2 valedictorians with 2300 SAT scores, both females, did not get in. It is a reach for anyone. As someone said above, write a great essay but definitely have some safety schools.
@texansfan1 @GTAustin What would you guys suggest putting as a second choice major? Another engineering, or major say like Biochem or Bio which are still hard, but not as competitive as engineering
Last year, UT did not consider second choice majors, at least for engineering and CS. If you were not accepted into your first choice, you were put into a general pool that had to choose a major from what had not been filled thru 1st choice picks. If you want to go into bioeng, try UT, but definitely look at some other schools that have a guaranteed acceptance into that major.
A&M does have a good program but it also is not a definite. I think you have to have a 3.5 GPA after the 1st year to get an automatic acceptance into the specific engineering major and they seem to be changing the rules every year.
If you want to stay instate, UT Dallas has a new bioeng program and they just built a new facility for it. UT Arlington also has a program.
