So im thinking of getting a Biomedical undergraduate degree and then doing a joint 5 year md/mba program. I've always wanted to somehow combine clinical with administrative yet i have a passion for biotech too. Maybe i could work in R&D of a biotech/pharma. Or healthcare consulting. I felt like a undergrad biomedical engineering would still give me a good chance for med school if i wanted to pursue a clinical route. What seems like the only sure fire thing is an MBA later on down the road.
So 1) is this a good route?
2) what kind of jobs would i be qualified for?
3) if you know how i feel with this whole multi-passion thing(and this is not a good route), what path should i pursue?

You’d be sought after for jobs in venture capital if you went to a top MBA program, as an exec for HMO’s and other health care organizations, for many jobs in pharmaceuticals/biotech…

so you want engineering undergrad + MBA + MD?
why would you do that to yourself?
personally, i’d like to enjoy life sometime before i’m 30.

to hmom5, would these be desirable jobs? as far as hours/pay/satisfaction/etc?
to jackb, thats why there are joint 5 year programs. so technically after all this i would be(without taking a year off between undergrad and med school) 27.

bump…plz i need more advice on this

Seems like a lot of letters to get for what?

VC are good jobs, steady and high paying. Health care administration are good job and pay very well, and will only grow in demand as baby boomers flood the health care system. I have a friend who went to Yale and got her MBA in health care administration and is doing very well for herself.

I don’t see how the MD would assist if you would like to get into administration. There are specific MBAs tailored to health care administration, biotech management, or CRO management. If you want the MD, then by all means get it, but if you don’t need it you might be able to find a better path to get where you want to be.

yeah that is something my dad tells me. I understand that Med school is a lot of hard work/money and im not sure if an MD would help too much where i might be going in life. But the problem is idk where im going! and an MD just seems like a security if my ventures into the management/entrepreneurial route dont really work out(less job security + less chances of lucrative job), like if i want to just go into clinical practice (with a group or on my own). Its just so scary!
any other advice would be greatly appreciated :)

bump…

Sounds like you should take it one step at a time since you seem like you have no idea what you want to do. The only problem with an undergraduate BME degree is if you decide you no longer want to go to school after that it’s not a very useful degree for the amount of time and effort invested.

so is biology, very useless if you decide you dont want to go to med school/gradschool anymore…but millions choose it ;]

And millions of people work at Wal-Mart. Your point?

Major in what you want as an undergrad if you have definite graduate school plans. BME is fine as an undergrad.
