biomedical engineering at u alabama birmingham

Is anyone familiar with the biomedical engineering program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham? Or is anyone familiar with the school itself, campus, campus life, dorms?

I almost went to UAB to major in biomedical engineering (and play in the band. Kinda wish I decided to go there now).

I don’t really know much about the program itself, but the campus is an urban campus. The campus is literally downtown in the heart of Birmingham. I’ve been in a couple of the newer freshman dorms and they are very nice. Suite style, 4 to a room with 2 bathrooms is the basic idea. And a small kitchenette. One of the dorms has a diner in it where you can order food from the grill. Kinda like a waffle house or bowling alley type food. Also, whenever I visit friends there, many students seem to enjoy hanging out in the different social areas in the dorm.

Yea, a response! Thank you so much. So there are dorms? Hoping to visit sometime in September.

Anybody else?

Hi Montegut,

So did your son get into bme at UAB? How did he like it? Where can they work after school? I live in a Chicago suburb and been checking on Iowa University, University of Louisville, University of Alabama Birmingham, Marquette, U of Minnesota Twin Cities, Miami University U of Arkansas. It’s for my son for next year. Any input in these would be highly appreciated.

Old thread, but just happened to be going through this. My son actually went to and graduated from Alabama, Tuscaloosa, with a mechanical engineering degree. He is currently getting his master’s in BME at UM-Twin Cities. I don’t think you have enough posts for PM yet, but if you do, please feel free to PM me. Because the BME industry is in Minnesota, I would encourage you to look into that school. My son also applied to Marquette, was accepted, but scholarship was barely half the tuition. Since he knew he wanted to go to graduate school, he decided to get a standard engineering degree first, then specialize in his master’s program. Good luck to your son, and I’m happy to help in any way I can.

@Guyw1clgbndson My D2 is going into BME. She applied to Iowa and UM-TC and was accepted to both. She received a scholarship for IS tuition at UM-TC and will probably go there.

Iowa State has a program where you can get an ME degree with a Biomedical minor. My daughter went to visit ISU but decided she wants to go for a BS BME.

@Montegut I have heard many times about Biomedical being concentrated in the Twin Cities and Boston. UM-TC is very highly rated in Biomedical. Probably doesn’t hurt to have UM Hospital and Mayo nearby!

Congratulations to your daughter, CyclonesGrad! UM-TC has been a great school for son to pursue his biomedical interest. He’s still job searching and we don’t know where geographically he’ll wind up, but he has definitely been pleased that he’s been able to do the work he’s always wanted to do there.
