Hi. I want to become a biomedical engineer and UPenn is my target university. However, I realized that biomedical engineering isn't listed as a major under Penn's engineering category; instead, it has bioengineering (under engineering) and biomedical science (under applied science). So does Penn offer biomedical engineering? What is the difference between the two? Can I still become a biomedical engineer if I study at Penn? I know bioengineering and biomedical engineering are used as interchangeable terms sometimes, but I just want to make sure especially since I am applying through ED. Thank you :)

It is my understanding that the terms are interchangeable. I have even seen on the Penn website in places where they will acknowledge that in most cases the major (at other schools) is termed biomedical. Since you are worried what I would do is take a look at your second choice school that has “biomedical” engineering and compare the suggested courses for study for each and see if they are similar.

BME and BE have been used by different universities for the same field, that is the use of engineering strategies in biological and medical domains.

I don’t know the difference but students have a lot of opportunity to participate in medical research activities at Penn. My daughter does not major in biomedical areas but she has been working in a medical lab since her first year.

Thank you guys, I really appreciate it. I will do some more research and maybe e-mail the school to make sure :)
