I would like to get my bachelors in biomedical engineering. This question is purely hypothetical (I have not been accepted by either institution). Which engineering school is better: UVA's School of Engineering or A. James Clark School of Engineering at University of Maryland- College Park? Specifically for biomedical or biochemical engineering? Anyone that has attended either program have any input?

What is your goal? Med school, working in research (NIH?) or for a pharmaceutical company?

Are you IS for either?

Honestly, they are both excellent choices, so you have to take into account different factors such as the various opportunities unique to a particular school, cost, which campus you feel is a better “fit,” current research opportunities, facilities available and other personal deciding factors.

FYI, Maryland offers both bioengineering [The Undergraduate Program in Bioengineering at the University of Maryland | Fischell Department of Bioengineering](Undergraduate Program | Fischell Department of Bioengineering)

AND chemical/biomolecular engineering [The Undergraduate Program in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Maryland | Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering](Undergraduate | Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering)

Also, Maryland is awesome for constantly upgrading their facilities in the STEM fields…

The Kim building is very impressive.

The biggest project that is still in progress is the new physical sciences complex

You will be particularly interested to hear they have ANOTHER new engineering building planned… “A bioengineering building that will include the Robert E. Fischell Department of Bioengineering and the Robert E. Fischell Institute for Biomedical Devices may open by 2017 at the earliest.”

FYI, in the spirit of full disclosure, I am both an alum (not of engineering) and the very satisfied mom of a current engineer (not bio) at Maryland, so I am a bit of a cheerleader for Maryland…
