I recently visited both Case and Washington University in St. Louis (WUSTL). I noticed in a brochure on WUSTL's Biomedical Engineering department that they added 3 new faculty members in 2004 who all came from Case. In the US News rankings, Case is still ranked higher than WUSTL for Biomedical (#6 vs #16), but I am wondering if anyone knows what happened in 2004 to cause Case to lose those faculty members and should I be concerned that that will eventually cause a decline in their Biomedical program?

no you shouldn't be concerned. what happened in 2004 was that a president was removed. President Hundert.

he was removed basically because he made a really over -budgeted decision to improve the school's facilities. but then in 2004 the school came up so under budget that there was like a 20 million dollar deficit. so many faculty were *ed at the school's ledership. (and I'm kind of *ed too at the admin.) and then old " fat man witha surf board" logo that he implemented was not popular with the old western reserve alums. the Case logo. b/c emphasized Case more than western reserve.

Basically, those faculty went because they believe the admin. was incompetent. I could give you a list of reasons why the admin. is incompetent, but you'll discover for yourself after you come here.

but the BME program at Case is tops compared to washington u. so b/c of the relative prominence of the BME dept. , Case admin. won't dare to cut any budget from that dept. when case gets budget cuts, they first cut the budget from weaker depts.

I have talked with the BME professors who left Case in 2004, and my understanding is that President Hundert did not have an effect on their decision to leave. PM me if you would like more information about this event.

Professors come and go. As long as Case can continue to attract top talents, there is nothing to worry about. In addition, all the "big" shots are still with BME when I last checked.
