Biomedical Engineering - Rutgers Honors vs Lehigh vs Penn State?

Rutgers appears to have the strongest Biomed program, with lots of research dollars, a new 80K sq ft facility, and Med School. Also with NJ the mecca of pharma and biomed companies, seems like a strength of Rutgers. Also, with scholarships and Honors Program distinction, seems like a great choice. Still though, Penn State ranks higher on the US News ranking list (not sure why or how since it has a biomed eng staff 1/3 the size of Rugers), and Lehigh is just such a great, prestigious school (although 2.5x the price of Rutgers, since out of state). I may want to go to med school, or Business School (MBA), after undergraduate school.

Please share your insights to help me with my decision. Thanks.

Lehigh is 2.5X the price of Rutgers because it is private, not because it is out of state.

That being said, have you been accepted to all of these programs? Or are you just thinking about where to apply?

A relative of mine is in Rutgers biomedical engineering. He has not had good teachers, has not been able to find help when he needs it, has not been able to get the classes he needs when he needed them, and will end up taking 5+ years to graduate even though he’s taken classes every summer. He also thinks that his medical school ambitions are pretty much shot also.

I don’t think he saved much money by going to Rutgers over a private since he will lose a year of salary plus the compounded raises over a lifetime. 4 years of summer tuition vs. income from working on internships is also a cost to be considered.

Overall I think he regrets his choice. I think he would choose the private if he had to do it all over again.

Been accepted to all. Have accepted Rutgers Honors Engineering program, and was just trying to get some other perspectives, hence my post.

Thanks for your reply. I am hoping that the Honors Program will offer me a better experience than your relative, since it gives me smaller classes, Honors classes, and professors they say are “chosen specifically”. I am trying to weigh the cost into this equation, since Rutgers, with my scholarships will cost like $20K/yr (which I have covered for 4+ years), and the private schools (Lehigh or Johns Hopkins (waitlisted)) will cost me like $55/yr. Seems like a lot of debt to mount up over the 4 years, and just wanted to get others input on whether it is reallly worth it in the long run.
