How does Vanderbilt's program compare to the likes of UW-Madison or smaller research universities like Lehigh?

Vandy’s BME is ranked 17th nationally. UW is 19th. Lehigh is no where in site. My son was also accepted at Lehigh…not even close. The head of their program only has 2 years experience in academia. Make sure that the schools BME is more of a department rather than a program that’s cobbled together with some biological sciences and some engineering. Vandy has a great hospital attached to it. If you’re OK with UW’s weather, check out Case Western. Incredible program (9th) and its connected to the Cleveland Clinic, recently ranked the 3rd best hospital in the country.

But if you want moderate weather, and a great all-around university…Vandy is an outstanding choice.

Are these U.S. News rankings? You must be a subscriber, then? I am okay with the UW weather, but it’s more the atmosphere/size that I prefer at Vandy.

What are some schools similar in size/atmosphere/campus to Vandy that also have good BME programs? Note: I am on the borderline for admittance to Vandy, so a slightly less selective second choice is what I’m looking for.

Thanks for the great help!

Univ of VA and Purdue are both ranked just below Vandy. Northwestern and Wash U are just above (my son was wait listed there and didn’t get in). You should really look at Case. You apply “Early Action” which means they’ll let you know in Jan, with no commitment on your part. The gave my son 20,000 merit money.

It’s good to know Case was generous, that makes a big difference. That’s why I like Vandy and Wash U so much.

Purdue and VA don’t give as much financial aid do they?

Not sure about Purdue. UVA may not be generous, but their tuition structure as a state school (even for out of state) probably brings the cost in line with Vandy.

Where do Syracuse, Minnesota-Twin Cities, Bucknell, and Rice stand in the BME rankings?

You might want to consider Duke or GeorgiaTech
