I just wanted to know, hows the biomedical engineering at UCLA and how does it rank with the other UCs?

For Biomedical Engineering, UCSD is ranked #3, while UCB is ranked #10.
The rest of the UCs, including UCLA, are ranked out of the top 20.

One of my roommmates is a bioengineering major, I've learned a lot about it from him. The bioengineering major is one of the newest majors on campus, it didn't really officially become a major here until about 3 years ago, it was actually created after we had gotten on campus (fall of 03). He started off in another major and had to transfer into bioengineering later on. He is literally part of the first class of bioengineers. Since it's such a new majo, the cirriculum is still kind of in development. I know that some of his upper division courses have had some very small enrollments because of how new it is. However, he's had some very accomplished professors and guest speakers because of UCLA's strong medical and engineering programs.

The rankings you see aren't so much a function of how good the program is but rather the reputation these schools have established and will fight for. Since UCLA's bioengineering major was just established, it gets a lower ranking. Either way, I think you kids put too much emphasis on the individual rankings of majors between different schools. There is so much politics going into those rankings it's ridiculous. The name UCLA still means something, and if you are going here and put the effort you will learn something. What's ultimately more important is that you are comfortable with the school and the environment, and most importantly, that you are comfortable and secure in yourself.
