Biomedical engineering?

Dead monkey, what about a major in computer engineering, with biology courses as well? That way, you’d have your engineering courses and your biology courses.

Our son wants to do biomedical engineering, and we’re starting to explore this option as an alternative if he can’t get into a bme school.

The problem we’re having is that comp sci and bio are under the college of arts and sciences, and the engineering majors are, of course, under the engineering dept. comp sci majors are not required to take chemistry and physics, which may hinder you if you want to do a masters in eng. The bio courses could only help you, I would think, if you’re interested in bme. I do think doing a CS major is a good idea, because you’d have a marketable degree in case you don’t get into grad school.

Go luck with your studies. Sounds like really neat stuff!

Well the Biology major includes classes in all the science fields, so it has a bunch of Bio classes (obviously), 4 Chem, and 2 Physics. Pretty much, it would cover all the science that a BME major or Biotech minor would cover, plus a couple classes, plus the added bonus that it’s a major as opposed, meaning it would carry substantially more weight with employers then a minor would. This path, while difficult, would give me the entire breadth of the science spectrum, depth into bio, and the full CS route. Win freaking win.

How about a double major…bioengineering…and biology…and a female engineering major. Any chance she’ll get a job when she graduates??

I assume so. Except I heard BME (or bioeng) is too broad of a major to be that marketable. That’s why I’m contemplating double-majoring CS/Biology or possibly CS major/Biotech minor. I’m just looking for advice on which of those two paths would be best.
Pretty much the only difference between the two paths is the Bio major/Biotech minor. Biotech minor takes 4 business classes and the Bio major takes an intro Bio, 2nd semester of OChem (the only one i’m really scared about…), Genetics, and a Bio elective instead. Anyone have any thoughts?

Have found a couple of schools that don’t require org chem as a BME. Since son not interested in med school, those would be okay for him. Would rather substitute an eng or stat class in its place. worried though would hurt him in the job market.

Do engineers need org chem?

Also noticed a glaring difference between CS under AS and CS under ENG, that the ENG have to take chemistry, where it’s not required for CS AS.

Why do engineers have to take chemistry?

Would doing CS under AS rather than ENG be less marketable?

DD (the bioengineering/biology double major) took a full year of organic chemistry…required course for her at her school.

Yeah, OChem (x2) is required for Bio & BiomedE, and one semester of it for Biotech minor.
