Biomedical Graduate School GPA

I am a freshman at Clemson University (which is ranked #36 for bme) and I was wondering what kind of gpa I would need for top bme graduate programs (such as Stanford, Duke, MIT, JHU) if I have good GRE scores and research. Also i was wondering what kind of gpa would I need for lesser ranked schools (such as Harvard, Yale, Cal Tech, Brown, UVA). Thanks in advance.

Assuming you are planning on a PhD, it is a much more holistic process and less numbers driven than undergrad admission. There isn’t a certain magic GPA threshold that will guarantee admission to a certain university. Do your best to get good research experiences and letters about your research ability and the GPA will matter less. For some schools it also depends on your major GPA, as opposed to overall. If you still want a number to shoot for, I’ve heard 3.5 is a good benchmark, but it really does depend on the whole application, not just 1 number.

mellon123, My son is a Senior majoring in BME and is applying to Ph.D. programs right now, so I will let you know how it goes for him.

He has been told by advisors that to get into a top 10 BME Ph.D. program you need a 3.8 ish GPA and a 95% Quant, plus of course research and LORs. He is applying to some top schools, but also some safer schools as some friends who thought they had the numbers, did not get accepted.

My sense is that the GRE and GPA are useful as first pass cut offs, but beyond that you would need to be a fit for that University’s lab, have great LOR’s and lots of research.

I recommend looking at the results posted on gradschoolcafe. Very enlightening.

How do you access gradschoolcafe?

Welldad, it is actually thegradcafe.com, a website. It has a results search function where site members voluntarily submit their information and the status of their application to a specific program, i.e. interview invite, accepted, denied, invite then denied etc.

It also has a forum section that is much more active than this grad school forum

Sorry, I didnt know the exact name, thank you for clarifying zotzot13.

thanks - guys
