Biomedical Sciences Applicants 2009

oh, you are UK citizen? They have fellowships to study in US?

No, I'm a Singapore citizen, and my government does offer fellowships to students to pursue graduate studies in the US, given that we are trying to build up our research industry back in Singapore.

great. good job on verbal scores then.
Well, apparently we are not trying to build up industry in Poland ;P.

I was finally complete at MIT biology, for those applying to the program, don't bother calling and leaving a message, they will never return your call. You will just have to wait for the complete email from them once they have processed everything. The processing time can take a while considering that I had all my stuff arrived in their office by mid-Nov.

shu_uemura your chances are really good, enjoy the interview ride.

Are people receiving emails from the programs they are applying to, encouraging them to send their applications early/ ask them any questions they may have? I received a couple of these and they seem somewhere between personal and generic, leaning towards generic.

Yeah, I have received a few of these emails. Usually the content is something along the lines of "finish up your damn app already" and these have been followed by equally sterile emails letting me know that my damn is finished and the school will get back to me if they feel like it. Don't call us, we'll call you.

Ok :). After an initial period of debating whether I was expected to reply to the emails or not, I finally did.

Hi everyone, I've been reading along for a while and I thought I'd post my profile to see what people here think. I'm a senior at a large public university and I'm applying to several top programs in biochemistry/structural biology. I've been told by a few professors (including one of my recommendation writers) that I'll get in anywhere I apply, but I'm not quite so optimistic. Here's my profile:

Degrees in math and biochemistry, minor in chemistry
GPA: 3.94
Approximately three years research experience with one publication; Various scholarships and awards as well
GRE verbal: 690 (96%)
GRE analytical: 5.5 (90%)
GRE quantitative: 800 (94%)
GRE biochemistry: 800 (99%)
I've also studied French and Chinese quite a bit over the last 3.5 years, but I doubt that will be a factor in admissions.

So ... what exactly are you worried about, again?

quelquechose- to quote Toy Story 2, sweet mother of abraham lincoln! you should definitely be optimistic. Is this a joke or do you really not realize how impressive that is?

Did someone start an acceptance/notification/interviews thread? Or are we just going to do that here?

I just started an interview/acceptance thread.

Hey everyone, I am asking for advices on my coices of grad schools~

my university rank top ten in my native country, my undergrad major is biochemistry
overall gpa: 3.6/4.0 science gpa:3.7/4.0
GRE:V 600(85%) Q 780(90%) AW 4 (37%)
ibt toefl:105 out of 120

LOR:
Deputy head of dept. of biochemistry (undergrad research mentor)
vice president of my school (my final year project mentor)
two associate prof. whom i met when i do my exchange in hong kong univ of sci.& tech., one of them was my summer research mentor
programs applying for:
U Penn BMG
Vanderbilt IGP
U of Florida: IDP
Indiana u: IBMG
Purdue: mediclinal chemistry and molecular pharmacology
U of Nevada at Reno: molecular pharmacology

i am very interested in the ibmg program at indiana u, can anyone tell me in which research area they excel? I am personally very interested in cancer biology. Especially tumor hypoxia, cancer stem cell research and differentiation.
Please evaluate my choices and let me know your advices~thx!!

Hey everyone, I've applied to a number of highly ranked graduate programs (focusing on Cell Biology and Molecular Biology programs) and I was wondering if you guys could tell me my chances of getting into these top programs?

The schools I'm applying to are:

Stanford, UC Berkeley, UCSF, UCLA, UCSD, UW, Rockefeller, Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Columbia, and Princeton.

Here are my stats:
MS GPA (Biology, UCSD): 4.00
BS GPA (Biochem and Cell Bio, UCSD): 3.89 overall (magna cum laude), 3.93 major
GRE verbal: 670 (95th percentile)
GRE math: 800 (94th percentile)
GRE AW: 5.5 (90th percentile)

My subject test scores (biochem) are pending and have been sent to all schools that require it. For those didn't require it I will contact them with my scores once I receive them and ask if I can still have ETS submit the scores to them (I didn't want to waste $ sending in scores that may not be reviewed because they will be reported after the official school deadlines, though most schools do seem to start reviewing apps in late dec./early jan.).

My research experience includes doing a senior honors thesis project for 1 year under a faculty member who received his PhD from Harvard as well as 2 years working towards my MS degree under a faculty member who did their PhD at Stanford and completed their post-doc work at Harvard. I also attended a national research conference earlier this year. I do not currently have any publications in time to list them on my applications but I am getting data together for a paper that will be submitted to a journal very soon (second author) and also expect to get 1 or 2 more first author papers before I leave my current lab (hopefully my PI mentioned this in the LoR).

My personal statement was tailored to each school (listing faculty I was interested in, the specific programs I wanted to do research under and how I fit into their programs).

My LoR writers all wrote very strong letters for me (as I was told). One of them was from my PI. All 3 have strong connections to the schools I'm applying to as 2 of them received their PhDs at Stanford and did their post-docs at Harvard, while another was a former faculty member of Columbia University.

My application also shows that I worked throughout college to financially support myself and also served as an officer for one year in a student-run organization with a strong emphasis on community service/diversity.

Thanks everyone!

Did anyone else apply to UCLA ACCESS? If so, are you able to see the documents that they have gotten in the "application status" page? Mine has NOTHING in it, despite the fact that I received notifications of LOR submission from all of my references...

I actually am wondering the same thing, but about NYU's Sackler program. Anyone apply and still have nothing posted in their update status?

I applied to UCLA's access program. On the application main site it won't update but my application info has been updated on the www.uclaaccess.ucla.edu site (just log in on the left hand side under quick log-in then click on "My Application" under the "My Profile" section). Hope this helps.

Now that applications are largely turned in and interview invitations are coming out, please migrate discussion over to the interview/acceptances thread.
