BioMedical vs. Mechanical

What is the harder major: biomedical engineering or mechanical engineering?

Hard to answer that one...it really depends on the program. I would not make a choice between the two on which one is harder or easier.

they both involve diverse subjects

Mechanical is very structured. You know what you are going to study, what you are studying and how it can be/is related to the real world (and how it is relevant for you as a Mechanical engineer).

Biomed, on the other hand, can be diverse to the point of being random at times. At my school, bioE's have to take classes ranging from the school of life sciences (predictable, yes) to MechE and Industrial E and EE classes...it's extremely varied. As a result, there is no 'streamlining' for any BioE program (except perhaps Hopkins). I've heard this same complaint from kids from ABET accredited programs (like Penn), and others (Berkeley, Columbia etc.).

So it just depends on what you prefer: a more loosely structured program (in an emerging field w/limited jobs) or a more structured one (in a more established field)

As Dr. Reynold's said this REALLY depends on the program.

Some new BME departments just use a combination of biology classes and ChemE classes which make a very difficult program while others "dummy" down other classes to make them "Biomedical".
