Biosc 0800

Hi all,
JW if anyone knows whether BIOSC 0800 (Bio for non-majors) would be an adequate prereq for Anatomy and Physiology? The class subtitle is The Human Body for Non-Majors. I'm not sure yet if I want to do premed, and I was thinking this class would be a good intro to help me decide.

I am aware that it's not an official prereq, however there are ways around that ;).

These are the kind of classes you take if you are a humanities student who never wants to do serious science classes. I am not saying that to be mean or critical about the class. (In fact, I would suggest that going humanities is a great life decision).

It will not prepare you for any course work in the biology department of any description. If you are considering pre-med you need to take intro to biology for majors.

Say you are someone who would do well in the nonmajor bio class but not in the general bio class, and afterwards you decide to do premed and take the other necessary courses. Then another class will come along and spill the reality to you. Honestly, if you are premed you take the premed classes. If you are not completely sure about premed, you still have to be willing to face the workload. Yes, it’s risky, but there’s really no way around it. Bio for non-majors wouldn’t fulfill the biology prereq for med school anyway.

So, to summarize, for someone to take Biosc 0800 with the intention of premed, they would be delaying the inevitable if they are not premed material, and wasting their time if they are premed material.

Also, I don’t think the College of Arts and Sciences has an A&P class (the closest would probably be Human physiology), but another school within Pitt probably does.
