Biosciences: Application information (old results thread)

hello everyone… so i had this question

when i applied to columbia they just sent me an email saying that they have received my application. they did not send me any separate email containing an application ID and website to log on to check the app materials status.

anybody had the same experience? is this normal?

i was thinking it was probably because I sent my application 2 days before thanksgiving and maybe there was some delay. i keep on checking everyday but it does not really reflect on the page. also im having the same problem with UNC.

=(

^ YEAH! About Columbia (I applied to Neurobiology & Behavior). I submitted Nov 22 and my fee was processed Nov 24. I sent a bunch of emails to admissions clearly stating that with no reply. I’m really annoyed. I sent transcripts and GRE way, way before, and it got to every school (except don’t know MIT, can’t check), so I’m sure it is there. BUT UGH. I just got the email right after you submit “the online portion of your application…” Irritating as ****.

As for how it takes for univ to process transcripts it really depends on just about everything. Sometimes I applied and it was already processed and matched up to my application, but other times 1-2 weeks. Prob more if you submitted right at the deadline.

safeteypin00

i was thinking they are waiting for the deadline before sending the department emails confirming the application. i just hope that its true. i sent my GREs and transcripts way before too and so my application was complete and should be complete. cross fingers!

columbia prob. didn’t send you anything yet cuz you submitted not too long ago, so i wouldn’t worry. apparently they have already selected candidates for the integrated program (to be interviewed jan 29) and they are in the process of doing so for the other programs.

but Nov 22nd is still early since their deadline for my program is Dec 7. How could they have selected candidates if the deadline hasn’t passed yet? The deadline for the integrated program is Dec 7th too.

there’s alot of anomalies in this grad school process then ive thought of

safetypin00, MIT sends you an email saying that they have received everything and will contact you after the applications are reviewed.

What about Duke and Northwestern? Has anybody heard anything?
I have not had a confirmation of my application status (and NW’s deadline was the 1st. of Dec) - if they’ve received everything I sent…
Has any international applicant already gotten an interview somewhere? I am wondering if they only contact int’ls after contacting domestic applicants…

MolSysBio when did u send your application to columbia?
does that mean admissions are indeed on a rolling basis?

For those who submitted their applications in late November and are freaking out, don’t. I submitted mine near the end of October and didn’t receive anything about the application ID until roughly a week or so ago. Don’t stress, and–if you’re worried–call in and ask to verify. They were kind enough to verify mine last week in advance of the email.

molsysbio - how do you know this about columbia/is there a place where schools make this information public or do you have an inside source?

a little late for this…but anyway:

670Q (64th), 630V (90th), 5.0 writing (81st)
Psychology and Neuroscience at top 30 liberal arts
3.76 cumulative, high honors in neuroscience
McNair scholar (woot, free applications)
Sigma Xi, scientific research honors society, cash award for ‘most potential in neuro research’
5 years research experience in multiple labs (started end of freshman year), including full time neurobiology for past year (started right after graduating)
1 paper published (2nd author), 2 in prep (1st author)
7 other poster sessions/talks including 3 scientific conferences (plus numerous lab meetings, obviously not on cv)

Applied (yay past tense!) to neuroscience/biosciences at:
*Stanford
*UC San Diego
*Yale
*U Penn
*Washington U (St Louis)
Northwestern
U Wisconsin–Madison
U Michigan–Ann Arbor
U Iowa

*DO YOU THINK THESE SCHOOLS ARE TOO MUCH OF A REACH FOR ME??

I’m just hoping that my low-ish quant score doesn’t screw me (damn you, engineering people!)

also, *** writing??? I didn’t study for it so shouldn’t be complaining, but felt like my essays were more like 5.5 material. Stupid computer algorithm “scorer”.

They are not too much of a reach, but, of course, all are extremely competitive. Your profile looks great. The only wild cards are letters of recommendation and research fit.

BTW, my daughter is applying to four of the programs you listed. :)

Momwaitingfornew, thanks so much for your input!

I have 3 stellar LORs, and one that is likely very good, but less of a sure thing:
*1) a rockstar psychiatry md/phd researcher who loved me in her summer prog
*2) my honors advisor, who gave me high honors, A+'s and nominated me for the award
*3) a prof I had 2 classes and a private reading with, and I’ve had many extensive research/life/ideas conversations with and said he is VERY excited about getting me into grad school
4) my current boss who said he knows me well enough to write me a “good” LOR…I’m very interactive in lab meeting, I’m doing difficult projects…he also got a lot of press recently for his work, so…

I’m just crossing my fingers at this point ;)

Which 4 same progs is your daughter applying to, and where else? I chose the programs in part through rankings, in part location, and largely based on faculty research. It was HARD to figure out which neuro progs were best!

She applied to your first four, plus Duke, Princeton, Brown, University of Pittsburgh, and UWash/Seattle. She chose those programs based on research fit and on a range of selectivity, although all are still extremely tough to get into.

Neuroapp, we have very similar stats (Neuroscience at a top 30 LAC, the exact same GPA, and pretty close in terms of years of experience and publications) and I applied to two of the same programs as you. Let’s hope we have good luck!

interesting news: a cure for cancer is in the works. the most promising research/treatment yet. look for it in nature in the next few months…no joke.

Ishuku, I read your profile. From what I can gather you’re also applying to Stanford and Yale? I had the same thing of “not applying to safeties” but because of my particular interests I was able to find 4 top-30ish progs to go along with my top 10’s. Anyway, I’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback from profs (just had a good phone interview tonight!) so I imagine we should both fare well in this process! Good luck :)

MolSysBio: any hints about which group it is or what the approach is?
