Birnkrant vs New/North

Could someone compare living in Birnkrant vs living in New/North? :) thinking about making some last minute changes to my housing preferences...

Beverly Hills and Compton probably have more in common. They couldn’t be more different. The only similarity I can think of is that they are both buildings.

elaborate?

Birnkrant = Trustee + Presidential scholars only, tall building with many floors.

New/North = Party dorm, where most of the future Greeks are; long, short building.

Also if you’re considering switching to Birnkrant this late, you won’t get it.

Well I’m a presidential scholar & I put down Birnkrant some time in March, and I’m thinking about switching my preference to New/North because I want to rush and go out a lot. Is Birnkrant like really quiet/antisocial? That’s my concern right now

No…stay there. They are both fine. You rushing has nothing to do with where you live! New/North is next door.

My son is finishing his first year at USC and is very social. He loves Birnkrant, would not have lived anywhere else. He goes to frat parties, and several of his Birnkrant friends have pledged. He describes Birnkrant as quieter than New/North, but strikes a good balance of social and academics.

My son would say the same things as Silvermac’s son. Although he has no interest in frat parties but many on his hall go and several pledged. I remember when we were deciding which dorms to select, we heard Birnkrant was called “seven floors of open doors”. This in fact has proven to be true. DS is in a triple which is basically two room together for three students. The front room is basically a living room. Since there is no common area on the hall, the kids use it like a lounge.

Between those two choices…Birnkrant. I agree with silvermac’s post.

My D was in Birnkrant and absolutely loved it. She’s made most of her closest friends from her dorm mates. Birnkrant is a VERY social dorm. It is perhaps not as noisy and active as New North seemed to be, but it is an excellent dorm experience. D truly felt she had the best of both worlds. Having Trojan Grounds right downstairs is a nice bonus…but it’s so close to N/N, I almost feel silly mentioning it.

BK and New/North are side-by-side. If you are in BK, congratulations. I wouldn’t fret over this decision.

Birnkrant! There may not be as many people who rush in BK as in N/N, but it’s definitely social. Plus, it’ll give you a chance to make good friends who aren’t also in frats/sororities. Trust me, there is no shortage of BK people going out on weekends. Good luck with your decision!

Im having the same issue. One thing I really like about New/North: It has an exercise facility! I love running (xc, track) but sometimes those are nice, and with premed as my potential course of action and exercise my stress-releiver, it’s a really tough choice! I’m pretty social and I wanna rush, but I get distracted if the people I am with are noisy and not “on the same page” as me (academically, as I’m not sure a party dorm would be the best place for a premed student to do well!). I’m also a presidential scholar, and just deposited last night… See you next year probably! haha

exercise facility?? more like a few machines. not in the main lobby…in the smaller one.I don’t remember if they were treadmills or EFX machines…maybe 3 of them. There are always people “not on the same page” not matter where you are. There are plenty of very smart kids in New/North. There are ALL KINDS EVERYWHERE!!!

Also, if you live in Birnkrant, your ID lets you into New/North anyway, so you can exercise there regardless. (Funny enough, Birnkrant ID’s let you into New/North, but New/North ID’s don’t let you into Birnkrant)

There are 4 ellipticals, around 6 treadmills, 2 bikes, and 1 stairmaster. Birnkrant and New/North (North Area) can all use the machines.

Just adding to stalkermama - Correct - there are smart kids in all the dorms. We know 2 attending this fall that were at the top of our high school ranks (as in Valis) that were not invited to Trustee/Pres interviews. They will be your roommates, classmates, dorm-mates. I have a feeling there are even a number of Trustee/Pres kids that choose other dorms for other reasons as well (we know of 2 for sure from last year).

It would seem to me that ALL of the students (except maybe some recruited athletes?) are at the top of their classes and smart kids/good students. My D is the salutatorian of her class of 318 (private college prep high school) and she isn’t getting a merit scholarship from USC. In fact she was a “spring admit” until last week. She will likely be in New/North or Marks. I told here that New/North were considered “party” buildings and she reminded me that she would likely go to the library to study!

^ Seriously. Of the 9000 acceptances in 46,000 applications, which ones are the dumb party kids?

Does anyone know which room numbers in Birnkrant face Mcarthy quad?
