Bisc 290 & bisc 193

Can a freshman take BISC 290 (Intro to Biological Research)?
Also what is BISC 193 (Freshman Colloquium I) class like??

I'm debating on whether or not I should take either one of these classes or a Freshman Seminar class.

Rarely anyone ever takes 290 because it doesn’t count towards the upper division requirement, if you look at the past course schedules, no one has taken it in the past year. For every unit you take, you’re expected to spend at least 4 hours in the lab doing research so 2 units = 8 hours a week. At the end of the semester, you write a research paper describing your findings to receive a grade but in this case, you don’t get a grade because its a pass/fail class. I’m pretty sure you need to be a sophomore and in any case there are prereqs:

In my opinion, I would just skip it and do 490 later.

I haven’t taken 193/194 but the professors did mention it. It’s once a week and the professors present their research findings and probably lead a discussion on their topic. Once again, its 1 unit and pass/fail so its not a GPA booster although it might be enlightening to see what they do when they aren’t teaching.

oh wowowow. 8 hours a week !?!??! and yeah I was advised not to take it first semester at the least. but I’m interested in research so I just signed up for bisc193.
Thanks for the help again!

You could probably bend the hours rules a little bit and its not like you’d be doing stuff for hours on end. If you have to run gels or PCR there’s lots of downtime to do other things like study, read, etc.
