I slacked off big time in hs, and my GPA is VERY low (I don't want to reveal exactly what it is, but it's sub-3.0.) As a result, my college choices are limited. However, I do want to major in film, and wherever I go to college I'm going to try to do well there and transfer after two years to a better school (NYU Tisch is my dream school but obviously that's a reach.) Anyway, my options of places to go straight out of hs are limited, but I want to go to the best school I can get into, which may or may not offer film production/screenwriting as a major. If I go to a school and major in something like mass communications and then try to transfer, will the fact that I did not major in film hurt me?

If your career goal is to be in the film business whether you want to be a director, producer, screenwriter, actor, etc. It’s always good to have other skills and knowledge of the business. Taking a communication major, business major, public relation major, or advertising major would be a good idea because those skills are important to have in order to be successful in the entertainment industry. If you can’t communicate or market your product or understand the business end of it, you won’t go far. If you can’t get into a film major for undergrad, try taking it as a grad program. Keep in mind that regardless of undergrad or grad programs, they are very competitive to get in. There are a lot of excellent film schools out there, NYU is not the only one. You’ll need to apply to several to even have any chance. It is that competitive in the film programs.

Yanno, more and more people are attending a junior college then ever before. I’d say go to school for a year a two to A-get all your gen-eds done and B-get some strong college grades and from there your options will increase significantly! In terms of film schools you should check out Emerson. Much smaller than NYU but just as known.
