Bitter Columbia Engineering Sophomore Rant

And Princeton is a bastion of conservatism?

I think someone is bored today. If not the OP needs to visit the counselling office ASAP.

It’s all relative

Anyway, it gets a better reception when a kid says, “I did everything right, poured myself into my academics, sought out profs, took on research with them, led this or that
and it’s not the best match.”

In a sense, without the effort, one hasn’t earned the right to complain and point fingers, diss peers.

No point looking for some miniscule silver lining when what one writes is 'tude.

But in his defense the title does say
it’s a bitter rant. So maybe just needed to release some steam

But hope he takes some of this advise seriously.

There is a thread for ranting already (the “say it here” thread) and there is one for college students specifically. http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/college-life/2149098-say-it-here-cause-you-cant-say-it-directly-college-version.html

Why are you bitter about not getting into HYP? You got a scholarship to attend your current school, right? That’s a great achievement.

It sounds to me like you pursued HYP for so long (literally half your academic life) that it was a real (and possibly unexpected) blow not to get accepted there. And instead of picking the best fit, your parents pushed you to what they felt is the most prestigious. That’s unfortunate.

The truth is that the people around you are smart. They appear to love the City and you don’t. If you’re from a warmer climate, it could be more than the city location and school name that’s affecting your mood. Please see a counselor at your school and your primary physician to chat about how you’re feeling. Sleeping more than usual, skipping classes, and not being interested in what’s around you are important symptoms that shouldn’t be ignored. It could be depression and/or seasonal affective disorder.

Transferring isn’t a bad idea if your family can afford it. But try to find a good fit (academic, financial, personal) to go to instead of focusing on all the things you don’t like about where you are. But try talking with a counselor and your primary physician first. There may be other things going on that are driving how you feel, and if you address those you may be able to make your current school work for you.

Please keep us updated and let us know how you’re doing.

Some of you are trying to “call my bluff”. I want to be clear that this post is 100% authentic. And no, Columbia is most certainly not, on average, on the intellectual level of HYP(SM) when accounting for the number of students whose only reason for applying was being starstruck with the city.

Come on, people. I know you do your research. All it takes is a simple search of the cross-admit comparisons between Columbia and ANY of HYPSM. Columbia gets blown out of the water vs. all of these schools. If a smarter and more accomplished student has a better option, why wouldn’t they take it? Not to mention, Columbia’s ED policy is in direct contrast to HYPSM’s REA/SCEA. The ED acceptance locks in lower-quality students, unlike EA which still affords higher-quality students who are accepted the ability to explore other options. Not to mention, ED > EA in terms of acceptance rate. Even WITH an ED policy in place, Columbia has a miserable yield compared to HYPSM.

Want more definitive proof? Simply search up the number of National Merit Scholars attending each school. 69/1092 = 6.3% of class (Columbia College). 195/1655 = 11.8% (Harvard). 147/1150 = 12.8% (MIT). 90/1343 = 6.7% (Princeton). 124/1578 = 7.9% (Yale). 157/1697 = 9.3% (Stanford). Columbia simply does not match up.

No, I’m not going to turn this ship around. I will not visit counseling services, either, because I know I am right.

Interesting that percentage of National Merit Scholars is almost even at Columbia (6.3%) and Princeton (6.7%).

Agree that those who apply ED to Columbia probably do so because they prefer to be in New York City.

No point in keeping this thread open then. It appears the OP just wanted to vent, and now s/he’s vented. Meanwhile the thread has devolved into debate, so I’m closing. I wish the OP the best of luck for the future.
