Hi~ I'm a freshman biz econ major. I am thinking that I might want to study abroad at some point during my college experience. Does anyone know if that fits in with a biz/econ major very well, or if I should do something specific my freshman year to make it work more easily a different year? Thanks in advance for any input regarding biz/econ + study abroad.

Hey, I’m actually doing the same thing. I’m trying to double major in biz-econ and Japanese, I’m going to do a year abroad in Japan, and I’m gonna knock out all of my Japanese classes and some econ classes there during my junior year. In my case, since I’m double majoring and going abroad for a year, I have to plan very carefully to make sure I graduate in 4 years (most likely taking summer courses at least 1 year). But if you are just majoring in bizecon, I doubt that you have to worry at all.

One thing you might consider is going abroad during your sophomore year instead if your junior year. And try to concentrate on GE classes while abroad that will fulfill your GE requirements. It is very hard to fulfill major classes while abroad. There are not many programs where you can take upper division engineering, science or econ classes. Most classes you will take in most study abroad programs will fulfill your GE’s. So try to get as many of your biz-econ classes in as soon as you can so that you have the luxury of going abroad and not massing much. I am a parent and my daughter who will be a junior this fall will be studying in Paris for the semester. She chose to go in the fall because she will only miss one quarter of UCLA classes. She will be at UCLA for the winter and spring quarter. So if you want to go abroad think in terms of the fall of your sophomore or junior year. My daughter had a friend who went to Spain during her sophomore year and she took all GE type classes. If you do want to go sophomore year keep in mind that most students start applying for their study abroad programs in the late fall as most applications start being due as early as January. So that would mean starting your research during the fall of your freshman year. There is tons of info on the UCLA study abroad website. Just do a search for it.

Once you get to UCLA look up the Education Abroad office and they can work with you.I think it is possible for most majors to go abroad you just need to plan well. You may also have to do a summer session one summer to make up for classes you might need.

That was super helpful. Thank you!

By the way, if you want to start looking at programs, etc. go to the International Education website: [UCLA EAP - index](http://www.ieo.ucla.edu/eap)
You would be best off doing a UC program as the credits transfer very easily. The main office in charge of everything is called International Education Overseas but the office for UC programs is Education Abroad Programs.
