BizEcon v Econ/Math v Applied Math

I've made a few threads in the past few days trying to pick out what I should apply for. For UCLA, I will have TAP as a transfer but am trying to pick my two majors that I am allowed to apply for. I know BizEcon is impacted and the average admit GPA is 3.93, with both Econ/Math and Math majors being much less stringent on admission and GPA. I would like to get into banking/finance and want a major that will allow flexibility in my career and that can provide me proper knowledge to move up, and possibly going to grad school.

I am afraid to apply for math considering I got a C in my Calc II (it was a fluke of a teacher), but have gotten an A in all my other classes, including the IGETC classes and Linear Algebra and my GPA will be just above 3.8 when I apply. I hope they will see my other grades and overlook the C. I don't know how they look at the TAP second major so I am considering that I apply to the math majors rather than BizEcon to increase my chances.

Anyone have experience with these different majors? Thanks!

I don’t think UCLA is really considered a good school for banking or finance. I think you’d be at a disadvantage compared to anyone even at USC Marshall.

The thing about UCLA is even if you got into their BizEcon program, you’d probably still want to minor in the accounting program which has it’s own application process with the except same pre-reqs as the BizEcon Major. So because of that I’d say you should apply for non impacted major to increase your chances of getting in and then do the accounting minor.

I know it’s not really a direct target, but I want to keep my options open so I was thinking that Econ/Math could be a versatile option.

I heard that Econ/Math is pretty much BizEcon on steroids. Also that there is a lot of wiggle room in the major for elective classes as well. I am done with Accounting I/II after this semester as well so Id plan on continuing some sort of accounting path.

Also, another question, if I went into applied mathematics, is it possible to add a double major?

You could double major applied math with something else, as long as there are no more than 5 upper divisions the same (so no applied math and math/econ or something). Given you seem to like the econ side, I highly suggest math/econ if you’re not comfortable applying for Econ. However, you’ll have to take 115A and 131A which can be tough classes for a lot of people (lots of proofs). Of course, with hard work it can certainly be done, and I am not trying to discourage you, it’s just something to keep in the back of your mind. In any case, good luck to you TC in your admissions.
