Okay, so I am in the process of applying to the University of Kansas's Honors College, which has a very weird essay prompt.

My writing style (I am a very strong writer) is slightly snarky. My teachers love it (as did the AP graders I think, got a 5). However, I am worried about carrying my voice over to a 500 word essay on "Blue or Green, defend your choice vigorously

I'm just overwhelmed by it, which is weird. I think I have a good intro and a two solid topics, but I need a third. I would appreciate any advice on how to tackle this, how much satire is okay, and how outside the box I need to be.

I don't want to be so out there I scare off the reader. :(

There is no hard and fast rule that you must have 3 topics. If you have 2 good ones, develop those into your 500 word essay. This is an off-beat prompt, so I think some satire/humor is expected in the resulting essay.

Write it as you wish, then have a couple “impartial” folks (adults or peers) read it and tell you if they think its off-putting or not. But the most important thing in these essays is to be yourself - so let it fly and you can revise later.

They clearly want to see your creativity, humor, and satire with that topic. I think a “slightly snarky” tone would work. Also, 500 words is not a lot. You may find that your two topics take up the full word count. I wouldn’t overthink it.

Thanks so much you guys. I submitted my application this morning with a completed essay (I may have rushed it, but I felt very confident in my writing), and my resumé and transcript. I had several people proof read it.

I’m going to be that scary student that feels as if she will only be happy at KU (which has a 97% acceptance rate). I qualify for their J-School automatically; I would just love to be in their honors college.

My base stats are excellent I just was psyching myself out on a offbeat essay topic. Good luck to everyone else, and I would be happy to read essays or offer mine up to be read for laughs :)
