Black or African American

Hi guys. On the common app I checked the option that said that I'm Black or African amercian. Although I am Black (I'm from Ethiopia, Africa) I am not African american.Am I just overreacting or was I wrong? I'm really getting nervous...

You’re fine, and you checked the correct box, unless there’s another one that seems more specific. They hardly ever include a category for “Non-American African.” You’re included under “Black.”

Hey! I’m Ethiopian too (born in America though). Good luck!

Ethopia is technically in Europe, so you should have marked “white”.

/black European

Uhh, Ethiopia is in eastern Africa…

^It was an obvious joke.

@amhara Hey great to know theres another Habesha at cc. Congrats on your Yale SCEA acceptance!

You are black OR African american. So, you ticked the right box. I am sure that I confused them as I ticked ‘other’, then called myself a White African. I am white, but have lived my entire life in Africa so do not see myself as ‘European’.

hey, i’m ethiopian, too
gedion9324-did you apply regular decision?
amhara-congrats on getting accepted!! are you going to yale?

Idiosyncra3y, I also ticked ‘other’ and then put ‘South African’ in the description box. Didn’t feel comfortable putting either European or African American.

It gets annoying when people try to classify Black people from the Caribbean, Africa, etc as African American.

Ooh, pulling out the inner Tori Hunter.

Thanks Gedion. Alamo, I’m pretty sure I’m going to Yale, I just have to wait for April 1st to decide ;)
