My freshmay year daughter has found a job in dining services - not a set everyday thing but whenever they need staff for dinners and receptions and the like. What is the ideal formal black pants that we could buy? Not "pin stripe formal" i am thinking.

I am thinking these would be good characteristics of this black pant:-
machine washable
quick dry
no-iron
pocket?

Is there anything else? More importantly please suggest where I could I get these.

DS has to wear all black for his busboy job. It makes me cringe but she’ll probably want a polyester blend. Very durable; no wrinkles. I get all of my kids’ clothes on eBay. (Just picked up a replacement pair for him for the ones he’s pretty much worn out for $4.)

Get something more durable than Forever 21. She will need to wash these frequently…and yes…they WILL get dirty.

I would suggest Kohls or Old Navy…even Target. Just get something that fits and washes well. This is not the time for a fashion statement…practical is the word. And as someone who has been there…don’t spend a lot of money…they WILL need to be replaced at some point. Inevitable in the food service field.

There are a few places that are perfect to find the pants that you need. You will want to consider a few things though before you decide on the type that you want and of course how much you want to pay.

One thing to consider is that she will without a doubt get absolutely filthy sometimes. That is just life with catering and food service. Catering and banquet service is especially mess producing because the parties are set up in different locations and with a wide variety of food set-ups. the food array will change and the display tables will always be different, so accidents are the norm.

Dockers are nice for work because they are cotton. They wash well and if you take them right out of the dryer, put them straight onto a hanger, they will not need to be ironed. The fact that they are cotton is a big plus because most people her age will not be happy wearing polyester.

Polyester uniform pants will cost more and can be found at a uniform store. They are machine washable and keep a crease. If you iron them though you need to turn them inside out because frequent ironing’s make them shiny. Be sure to get her comfortable non-skid shoes too.

They might be a little pricier than you’re looking for, but if you can find them on sale, Express has great options that wash and wear really well, and last forever. Had two pairs that lasted through two years of working in retail during HS, then went on to college as proper formal black pants and still looked great.

I work in an office and get all my black pants from JCPenney. I spend maybe $20-$35 a pair depending on sales at the time, mainly buy things like worthington, east 5th. They are washer safe, I hang them up to dry but I think they may be dryer safe too, I don’t take my chances in the dryer with pants. I don’t even own an iron and don’t know how to use one. No problems.
