Black People.

I'm black and I wanted to know if they are well treated at Dartmouth. Like, will I have to try double hard to get friends, will the women avoid me (impossible but ya),and will I just be socially outcasted? Let's face it, this school is not a Morehouse in terms of the black pop.

DMC,

Hello, very vocal black person here. While there are not an overwhelming number of blacks at Dartmouth (there are not an overwhelming number of blacks at any of the Ivies or elite schools so at some leel it is sort of the buy-in that you make when attending) However, my daughter has a large array of friends of all races. She has gone to school in a diverse setting all of her life. He has however told me that she does have friends for whom attending Dartmouth has ben a bit of a culture shock because they have only been to predominately black schools. You will have no problems getting friends,as people are people.

I understand your concern, but they are a very welcoming bunch of people at Dartmouth, because they are truly avery down to erth bunch. The class of 09 is the most diverse class of admitted students in Dartmouth history with 46% representing people of color. No matter where you ultimately attend school you have to know who you are are how much of your self are you willing to put out there. If you present your self as assessible, then people will be assessible to you. If you act like a jerk, you will be treated as such.

Yeah, people are mad cool. I literally have friends of every race, and its nothing like the south where people segregate themselves. Honestly, you might get more women because you are black, its more on that side of things. I am Indian and race honestly never entered my head...

Speaking for the white people going to Dartmouth next year (yeah 09's!) Ok, so I can't really do that, but when I visited I met a lot of people in frats, dorms, and around campus and every single one of them was relaxed, friendly, and very open. This is actually one of the biggest reasons that I fell in love with Dartmouth was that everybody was so comfortable. I didn't get the feeling at all that there were racial problems/tensions. I will be your friend and I'm about as white as they come.

Echo that....when I visited D-mouth last august...I was SHOCKED to see people of differant races sitting at the same lunch table. Such revolutionary things don't happen at a lot of campuses cough like Duke cough

"Honestly, you might get more women because you are black, its more on that side of things."

lol, it's true, especially if you look like flex alexander or shemar moore...

See. taurustorus, you just burst my bubble.

I look more like allen strange!!

It seems like it doen't matter what color you are, it just ain't easy being you :)

"I look more like allen strange!!" --> he's pretty cute!! the now arjay smith, that is... strange was kinda young, and short, heh.

Hey, Devil May Cry,
Ditto to what everyone else has said...in most cases. However, there definitely are groups of black students that sort of self-segregate, and hang out in their own cliques. I have black friends who hang out with people of all races, but I guess some black students, maybe those who went to mostly black schools, aren't comfortable with that. But it's definitely the student's choice. If you are open to having a more diverse group of friends, it won't be difficult at all for you; everyone is very accepting.

I agree with that. There is a black clique (cutter-shabazz...they throw good parties) and a ton of people who are absolutely integrated regardless of race. Literally my best friends from Dartmouth are from every race and economic background.

yeah, sybbie, i AM pretty hot. Also, I hang out with ALL races and love all people. I disliked Duke in the vein of segregation. That is NOT me and I will not tolerate going to a place like that.

Duke is segregated in more ways than one cough HIGHWAY cough.

Hehe my (black) gf visited Duke and hated it for very much the same reasons.

Does Duke segregate against Indians too?

Just wondering.

DMC, are you from Eastern PA by any chance?

the strained racial relations at duke is one reason I don't think I'll apply next year as a black female. Granted my friends are mostly white, but that's what happens when you are one of 10 minorities in the school I guess. I too am looking for a place where people of different backgrounds are all friendly towards one another

I dunno, I didn't think Dukes relations between the Indians and Whites were strained, mainly because they tend to both come from upper middle class families - Do you think the divisions are more racial, or more based on socioeconomics?

Nope....the one thing that unites races at most elite universities is class....even URMs tend to be more well off then Americans at large.

Most blacks at elite colleges are wealthy and from the carribean area, as I've been told at least.

Yeah, I def. think its class, not race...

By URMS, you meant non-underpresented minorities kb, right?

urm typically means underrepresented minority
