I'm applying Regular Decision to NYU in a few days, and I have some qualms about my topic of choice for the first NYU supplement (if you could spend a day with a famous New Yorker, who would it be and why): Blair Waldorf. of Gossip Girl. I personally dislike the show itself , but the character was very well-written, and fictionally she goes to NYU. I answered the 'why' part with wanting to learn from her poise & self-confidence. The essay definitely isn't drab, but Gossip Girl isn't the most thoughtful, or the most well-received show among adults (admissions officers). What do you think? I really do want to write about Blair, but I don't want to risk my application if it is a terrible idea. Honest opinions would be appreciated.

btw, I've never started a new thread before, so I'm not sure if this is the right format?

i seriously don’t think just one short answer will affect your overall application. just trust your heart, if she represents you then use it.

doesn’t really matter to be honest. work on your essay. that will count most.

haha. you’re doing it right =P.

just to clarify, the question never asks why. it just asks who you would spend the day with and what you would do. the key is to stick to the prompt. the less time you spend explaining, the more activities you get to describe. i did mine on lady gaga, and it helped me get into stern ED. if you would like to read my supplement, i’ll be glad to PM you.

i’d love to read it! PM it please. thank you ((:

I wouldn’t do it. Risk without any real upside. Plus, my guess is you wouldn’t be the only one this year to pick her.

while i agree that one short supplement won’t make or break you, there are probably other famous New Yorkers that are poised and self-confident AND that have more depth than Blair. and while i appreciate GG (as a media studies student), i doubt the ad com will. it’s like picking Carrie Bradshaw. yes, she’s a famous fictional New Yorker, but there isn’t really much there.
