I just wanted to know how the CC community felt about blocking sites on the computer. Recently I feel like I've been spending too much time on time-wasting websites (ex.- YouTube, Reddit, etc.), and would like to limit my time on these sites.

Have any of you tried blocking these websites before? Was it hard to get through? How were the end results?

Currently I'm trying out "StayFocused", a Google Chrome extension.

I know a lot of people have recommended blocking Facebook, but I've found that Facebook is actually helpful in terms of study groups, chatting with friends, etc.

IMO, Youtube is a lot more distracting than facebook. Our school started issuing laptops this year so if I want to stay focused, I would use those, because they block everything.

Facebook can be useful, but Reddit is just stupid. I’d recommend never going back to it again. If you want to do this, first reply to all your outstanding messages, but don’t post any new comments. Once you stop checking back for replies, half the site’s appeal will be gone. I guess that depends on if you like to comment a lot or just look at the links.

Well I used to post a lot of threads (not so much replies) so maybe things were different for me. I even made some AMAs, boy were those time consuming.

I use Self Control for my personal Mac. You create a list of sites you want blocked and set a time limit on it. It will not let you on those sites until the time is up no matter if you restart your computer, try to exit the program, etc. You would have to literally wipe your computer clean and reinstall the operating system to get it to stop =) Very useful if you use a Mac, and it’s free to download.

There’s also a cheap alternative for PCs, but I forget what it’s called.

I don’t like google chrome and I don’t have a mac, so I’ve been trying to hunt down something similar. Blocking facebook would be really helpful.
