Blogging advantage?

With respect to ECs, how much does a blog about software and stuff help show interest towards a CS degree? Does it help increase admission chances in any way?

Also, does the mere fact that you have a regularly updated blog matter enough; or, do you also have to have lots of traffic and fame? <--This may not be important, but I'd like to know anyway.

I have a blog of my own, with 7000+ page hits (in two months) about mechanical engineering. I thought it was a cool extracurricular of my own that shows interest, consistency, and skill

Bump; Can anyone offer a view into this? - 2 members require help :)

It’s worth a mention, although I wouldn’t consider it anything spectacular. It can’t hurt, but I doubt it would change a reject to an admit.

Readership will indeed be the key stat here; no matter how good your blog listing 243 types of tobacco ash is, nobody at the admissions office will care unless you’re getting significant numbers of readers.

I don’t necessarily agree with exultationsy: If you are really passionate about tobacco ash, have collected, researched, classified and studied it for years, and can write a coherent essay on why this is important to you and what you plan to do in your future career as a tobacco ash expect, then it will certainly differentiate you from all the other editors of the school newspaper and captains of the math team. The point is that it’s not just about a blog - no matter what the topic - it’s about why that subject matters to you, and what level of expertise you’ve attained, and what kind of recognition you’ve received. If you have a low readership - but they are all world experts in that topic - then you are doing very well indeed. Of course, if you don’t know what kind of influence you are having, then readership is a good proxy. But make sure there’s more to your interest then just a blog on the topic.

And now I agree with her disagreement with my original post. I was mostly trying to argue that a Myspace pinging into the silence is probably not going to have any effect. Instead, if there are any points where our posts disagree, go with hers.

Thanks for the feedback. I’ll think about it. :)
