I think it’s a way for the university to be able to project how many spots will be available in the following years for incoming students. If they know that only new students can move in, then they don’t have to calculate how many existing students might also want to move in to honors.

I don’t know this for a fact…but I imagine if there are honors vacancies right before schools starts, Bama is willing to accept the money to fill those spaces.

Generally an honors student cannot pull a non-honors student into honors housing, but it has been an option in the past when space was available. As for not being able to move into honors housing after freshman year, UA could allow it if they wanted to. We apply for recontacting and are then offered a contract if they feel that there will be enough spaces for incoming freshmen. While freshmen are guaranteed housing, current students already living on campus have first priority in choosing rooms. If anything, I think students who are new to the honors college (qualified based on their college GPA) should be allowed to move into honors housing even though they were previously living in non-honors housing.

One of my friends was not in honors and was “pulled” into honors housing before the start of the fall semester. Another friend moved into honors housing before the spring semester, but she also joined the honors college then as well.
