Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan raised to 80k yay!

Does anyone know if you ARE dependent if they count your income AND your parent as the 80,000?

I.E. My mom makes 70,000 and I made 20,000 (not real numbers, fyi) for this years taxes?

P.S. if they answer is yes, I’ma be supa****ed

@nick, you are by far the coolest guy on here, per your reply.

i appreciate it alot! so the Blue and Gold thing “kicks in” AFTER i have collected my other grants and what not?

seems like davis housing is maddddddddddd expensive, ■■■■■ @ 20k.

i was having a panic attack on whether or not i’d have to take out huge loans to pay off of this off, looks like the Lord has made a way for me after all.

^^ or the taxpayers/alumni made a way for you…

“the lord” being the UC regents?

lol

…or a divine intervention occured through what seems to be a typical fee increase. regardless it’s testimony, those with faith know what i mean. if you go through school not believing in a divine being of some sort, then you should be afraid.

as much as I adore discussions about faith and what kind of faith I should be having, does anyone know the answer to my question?

@BlackMamba

My parents make almost 100k combined, and I’m extremely grateful for that, but don’t just say “lol u must be rich what r u complaining about”. Both parents work 14+ hour workdays to support the family. My older brother is in college also and I have twin younger brothers which will be, financially, quite the burden when its time for their education too. Add to that obviously this is California and it costs quite a bit to live here.

Basically, the way I see it, the extremely wealthy families don’t suffer too much since they can afford it. The lower income families (who I believe ARE entitled to aid, don’t get me wrong), don’t pay as much, and the people in the middle such as myself have to get the debt. There is no solution though, I guess that’s just the way it is.

… Guys, fill out some scholarship applications and stop complaining. There is plenty of money to go around.

@isus39

it’s not like if you’re over 80k you dont qualify for financial aid anymore. With 4 depdendents and 1 in school full time, you will get financial aid. While you may not get a promise of your tuition covered, you will probably get a lot. If it’s not enough, a federal parent plus loan can cover the rest. Low rates, your parents can transfer it into your name when you graduate if they choose, it can be deferred the same as a student loan, etc. etc.

so don’t worry, you’re not going to be entirely screwed over.

Yeah, I know, I was just trying to refute the guy who said anyone making 100k is automatically “getting richer”.

@Ella89

Have any suggestions? I’ve not been able to find many scholarships that white males can apply to that weren’t swamped with applications–hardly “plenty to go around.” But if you know of any, I’d love to apply. :-)

I think a lot of people who are under 80k get really upset (including me) at those who think we don’t deserve it or something. I have plenty of friends who ***** about it because they think just because their parents make more doesnt mean they don’t deserve financial aid. I have a friend who told me how unfair this was because “her dad’s millions of dollars in stocks he has count against her” and “it’s not like cash, I don’t get to use it.”

everyone just needs to remember that virtually no one can just take out 30 grand of their bank account and not have it hurt. even those who do make over 100 k.

lets just all be nice to each other and understand that we didn’t make the rules and we should all just roll our eyes silently at the ones who **** us off and then move on.

Nick, I know you were being sarcastic but I really do know of a lot of scholarships. This late in the year most of them have passed the deadline. But if there’s a decent amount where the deadline hasn’t passed I’ll make a thread. I said the scholarship thing because I know SO many people who complain about not getting fin aid but at the same time they don’t even try to apply for scholarships. If you have tried and not succeeded I can understand being angry. But it irritates me when people complain about things they haven’t tried to solve by less conventional means.

I wasn’t being sarcastic… The smile was supposed to indicate that (admittedly somewhat counterintuitively). I haven’t looked recently, but I spent a lot of time on FastWeb a few years ago. It seemed everything was targeted to a specific group, be it ethnic, gender, regional, a specific major, etc.

We all hear about the millions in scholarships that never get awarded, but I’ve not found any scholarships for a white male political science major that weren’t highly competitive. They may very well be out there, but I’ve not seen them.

So, if you come across any, send me a PM. Don’t want the CC hordes to make it super competitive. :-)

Okay, this might be stupid, but I’m really confused. My parents make somewhere around $60,000, but after filing the FAFSA and CalGrant, the website said we’re only eligible for an $1100 Pell Grant and a $7000 Stafford Loan. We still have an EFC of somewhere around $6000 (if I remember correctly; the paper isn’t in front of me).

So I guess my question is, does the Blue and Gold Plan count loans as you not having to pay tuition? Or does the Blue and Gold Plan come into play later?

Is this based on your PAN from a UC campus, or something else?

So my FA for CSUN is $10,500 in sub and unscun loans, lame!! I should qualify for Blue & Gold for the UC’s. I guess it’s either UCLA or UCI for me.

@nick_scheu (because I think you were talking to me)

It’s from the FAFSA website, in the summary they give when your FAFSA is done.

FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. All it provides directly is the federal student aid you’re eligible for. However, colleges use the FAFSA information to allocate their own aid. It’s more efficient than making you fill out another financial aid application.

After you’re accepted to a UC you’ll get a Preliminary Award Notification, which will include Blue & Gold, in addition to Cal Grants, Pell Grants, and various loans.

So what is the solution then? It’s not fair if low income students can’t pay their tuition but it’s unfair if they get help to pay it? Just as it is someone’s “choice” to not make money (because we all know that people that are considered low income choose that), it is someone’s choice to make enough money to no longer qualify for aid. Stop complaining about people getting aid.
Also, I hardly think anyone who is loan free is “chillin” not worrying about a job. Give me a break.
Furthermore! I am low income and not all of my aid is grant money, a chunk of it is loans. So we aren’t all sitting back getting free rides and laughing at people who have money. If I or my family could afford my school, you bet your sweet ass we would be paying for it.
