Bluebook Test6_Section4_Question5

In response to the traditional assumption that all readers are basically alike, feminist critics have emphasized [that every woman reads from their own unique perspectives].

between these 2 choices

(A) (Original)
(B) that every woman reads from her own unique perspective

Answer: Choice (B) is correct. It avoids the error of the original by replacing the plural pronoun “their” with the singular pronoun “her” to agree with the singular antecedent, “woman.” (CollegeBoard)

I chose choice (B) as well, but only after seeing that the singular verb "reads" doesn't match with plural pronoun "their". I thought there was a rule that "every" matches plural subjects or does that only apply to words such a everything, all, etc?

every is singular. Along with neither either, something, someone, everyone, everybody......so the subject is every and since it is singular his/her is preferable to their. But your way works too. Good reasoning!

Also, it's "every woman," so it would make sense to use "her" rather than the gender neutral "their" (which, by the way, is always incorrect).
